How reliable is Malwarebytes and Spybot?

I had an issue with my email client (tbird) I posted on a forum with employees of that creator. They suggested my issue was malware. I scanned with spybot and malwarebytes. nothing was found by MB and I fixed the things spybot found. None indicated it was malware. Can I rely on those results?

Edit- I use spybot all the time. I just downloaded MB to backstop the SB scan.

MWB is a good on demand scanner but don't have real time protection running alongside Microsoft Defender as that could cause conflicts. I think maybe Spybot is a little outdated for current operating systems.

I moved your thread here because you posted a general computer security question. Follow the posting instructions and run the scan before posting in the virus removal section.

I will third this opinion. SB S&D is not effective in modern computers, and it should be uninstalled.
Malwarebytes Free using Manual scan is a good secondary Malware removal to compliment Windows Security (Defender) do not pay for Real Time Protection and let the Free Windows Security (Defender) take care of that.

When you Disable the Trial version of Malwarebytes, you then have the Free version and you have to Manually start it and run it. So, you would run it after you think you may be infected. This works really well. After you start it, it will reside in your Taskbar by the clock as an app that is running in the background and will protect you from any incoming malware until you restart or shut off your machine, then you have to manually start it again.

Been running Malwarebytes for 20 + years? Free version. I've destroyed operating systems using it. It does what it needs to. I also run superantispyware virus, Ccleaner. All free. The operating systems it destroyed, it was too late to save them. Bleeping computers has Rkill. Shuts off where viruses hide. Then run the programs. You shouldn't have to pay for antivirus, microsoft builds it in to the OS. The only reason to get a program like AVG, Nortin, if you use a outdated version of windows where defender doesn't support anymore.

Are you really using Win98? If so... anything anybody says may or may not apply. If you are using Win10 or Win11 MWB is fine. I have it installed on my computer but it is not activated automatically when I start the computer. I use it once every 3 or 4 weeks to do an extra scan just to make sure something hasn't been missed by Windows Defender. For Win10 and Win11 Windows Defender has finally gotten so good, you don't really need some other security software, but I feel like having a backup is worth doing. I even have a SECOND backup... McAfee Stinger is a standalone virus scanner (needs to be downloaded every time you want to use it to get the latest version). One time in 20 years it found something the other security software did not find. But it has been a long time since Stinger has been needed or fixed anything since other security software has gotten better over time.

Paying for Malwarebytes these days is foolish as like all other "#1 programs of the day", as many have said here it has slipped and will continue to. Spybot I haven't heard of for many years and didn't even realize it is still around. Superantispyware once "king of the hill" sadly today belongs also in the "scrap heap" of programs passed by, by time IMHO. Free Antivirus programs are again IMHO dinosaurs and hopefully will one day disappear like most Antivirusa programs today are just uselessly slowing down today's pcs with no real positive benefits. And whatever you do never run 2 Antivirus programs together...I still find that now and then on really dead slow pcs.
