hello everybody! am new here. i have 2 x31 thinkpads with same problem. power is ok but it wont boot. But if i press the back of it ( where the memory card is) it boots up and proceeds to windows but for a few minutes only.....it shutsdown! powering it again it no longer boot but doing same thing above it boots. i have it diagnosed by a repair technician he said video controller is the defect but i doubt it! Also i cant hear nor feel the fan working by having cigar smoke near its air vents. the model is x31 2672bla. i contacted ibm parts and service the system board cost 30K in philippine money. Its like buying a new laptop. thanks in advance guys i really need help!!!

The IBM tech could be right. It could be the video card/motherboard. What you can try may be is use a good/working RAM module. Remove the ones you have right now. Also since you said you need to press the back side where the RAM is, may be you can visually check if the RAM modules are seated correctly. Some put a folded piece of paper with just enough thickness between the RAM and the cover. This will simulate you pressing on the back side. If it boots up just like you pressing the area where the RAM is, then may be you should have the RAM slots repaired (too bad these are part of the motherboard). If and when it boots up, observe if you get any beeps.

Post back after you have tested both laptops with a good/working RAM (a new module is not really required but it is nice to have for testing).
