How do I know where to put the "tabs/pins" on the back of the hard drives to make it a master and the other one a slave?

Hi,

Normally there is a normally a label on the drive to show the correct positions, or there may be letters engraved or stamped on the hard drive by the pins.

You should also be able to find the jumper settings from the hard drive manufacturers web site.

Or google the drive make and model number and "jumper settings"

Hi,

Master drive does of course have the operating System on it.

The Master drive is normally furthest from the motherboard on the IDE ribbon cable ( or round cable )

The primary hard drive also needs to be connected to the primary IDE connector on the motherboard.

Manual or specifications for motherboard will tell you which is the correct IDE connector on the motherboard. Or google for the motherboard details.
