Surfsidekick2 Removal and Norton Problem

I know...not another one. I am also unable to rid my computer of Surfsidekick2, along with other adware/spyware. I am using XP and running Spysweeper and just downloaded PopUp Stopper. I use Yahoo as my browser not Explorer. I use my computer for teleservices work and was unable to even work tonight due to the amount of pop ups. I have tried to manually delete some of the adware in the past and I think I actually ended up screwing up Norton. So now, when I boot up it tells me that that there is a problem with Norton and I need to uninstall and reinstall. But my computer will not allow me to uninstall because it states there is a newer version on my computer and when I put either of the discs in (I upgraded in the past) it states there are files missing, etc. It is a mess so say the least. Computer genius I am not. Frustrated I am.

I did run a scan. Please see below:

You have one of the nastiest boogers on the 'net. We will do some cleaning in preparation for the harder removal phase.

-----------

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Download FixAgent and unzip it. Run FixAgent.exe. It should fix something. If nothing is fixed, skip to the next step for the HijackThis fixes. If something is found, also download home_missing_114 and unzip it. Run the Home winkey missing batch file. Remember: ONLY run home_missing_114 if FixAgent found something.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\roqwgk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\addtn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ovcszfer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msetdirg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\d3eb32.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

SurfSideKick 2
WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Certainly didn't mean to scare you, just wanted you to be prepared for a hard road ahead......much more yet to do to get clean.....hang tough!

===========

Before doing anything, MAKE SURE that you can keep your computer on (at least until we get it fixed). This infection requires us to detect and remove it without rebooting or restarting your computer. If you can't keep your computer on today, then I suggest that you don't get the logs yet until you are ready. With that said (when ready):

Please download the following programs required for the removal process:

Kill2Me http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Kill2Me.exe
PV http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/pv.zip
VX2Finder(126) http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/VX2Finder(126).exe
Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe
CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ or http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Cleanup.exe
KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe
notify.bat http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/notify.bat

Please follow the steps below:

1. Run Kill2Me.

2. Unzip the pv.zip files contents to your Desktop (NOTE: It MUST be on your Desktop!).
a) Open that folder on your Desktop and double click on the runme.bat file.
b) Type in 3 and hit your Enter key. Save the log file.
c) Type in 5 and hit your Enter key. Save the log file.
d) Remember to copy and paste both of these log files in the forum AFTER you are finished with the rest of the steps below.

3. Run notify.bat and it should open up a notify.txt Notepad file. Copy and paste this in the forum later.

4. Run VX2Finder(126) and click on the Find VX2.BetterInternet button. Click Make Log and post this in the fourm later.

If you must restart/reboot your computer, you will have to basically start all over again (starting from Step 2 above with PV). The detection and removal process must be done at the same time without the PC being rebooted.

We also need a list of files in the following folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ - there might be a download folder here. We are looking for any randomly named files. Post anything that looks suspicious.

AND YOU ALSO NEED A LIST OF DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES? WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO COPY AND PASTE THAT LIST? IT IS APPROX 24 ITEMS LONG AND FROM WINDOWS EXP, NOT AN OPTION TO COPY/PASTE. THANKS SO MUCH AGAIN.

OK...Please note this is a new type of hijack and may take a few trys (hoping not) to remove it. If you have any questions before a step...ask please.

1. Run VX2Finder(126) again.

2. Run Cleanup and clean ALL temp folders. Say NO when it asks you to reboot/logoff. Check your Downloaded Program Files folder for any program that you do not recongized and remove anything in question.

3. Delete the following files::

SKIP THIS SECTION!

C:\WINDOWS\System32\********* <<< If it exsists!

**Note** Use KILLBOX to delete if they give you trouble. If you still can’t remove this file..then add it below in step 5 to be removed on reboot.

4. Open regedit......start....run...type in regedit. Once open click file...export and save a copy of the registy somewere as a back up. Once done navigate to this key...

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Telephony]

Find the entry key for aza6l1hs1.dll file...highlight it...and click delete. Delete the Telephony folder. Close regedit.

5. Run KILL box. Paste the following locations into KILL BOX one at a time. Checkmark the box that says "Replace on Reboot", "Use dummy File" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) for each file. Click the RED X and it will ask to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\aza6l1hs1.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spOrder.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\guard.tmp
<--if it exsists

6. On the reboot hit the F8 key to enter safe mode.

7. Run hijackthis and have it do a scan. Fix the following entrys..

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

Close Hijack

Now run Run Hoster to reset/restore your hosts file.

Run Cleanup again and clean everything. Say YES when it asks you to reboot.

8. Reboot into normal mode..run hijackthis again and check for those 01 entrys. They should be gone. If not....open C:\Windows\System32 folder and sort the files by date. There will be 2 new dlls.

**Note** If your first attempt failed..repeat the removal process using the 2 new dlls filenames that were created and paste those into KILLBOX in step 5 and continue to following the procedures from there. Remember….don’t reboot until you delete those files..otherwise the filename will change again. If nothing works….then located the 2 new dlls and Post them here along with a new set of logs from PV and notify.txt Also post a fresh hijackthis log.

If the removal was successful please reboot and post another hijackthis log so we can confirm!

Good Luck!

Question

I suppose when you stated "SKIP THIS SECTION" you meant No. 3 only, and to proceed with No. 4. Is this correct? Thank you.

Also, when I tried to find the entry key aza6l1hs1.dll in the Telephony folder, it was not there. There were 7 other entries though. Do I still delete the entire Telephony folder? Thanks.

Help!!!

Okay, TWO PROBLEMS.

Problem No. 1 - I did everything up to NO. 6 After entering SAFE MODE, I attempted to run hijackthis. I get an Windows error message and tells me it has to close. So I am unable to run it.

Problem No. 2 - I went ahead and rebooted in normal mode and now I get a SECURITY ALERT Pop up from Symantec that states: "Your computer is at risk in the following areas: - Virus Protection turned off
Open your Norton product to resolve these issues
(then it has a box to check beside:) To prevent duplicate security status alerts, use my existing Norton Product alerts and turn off redundant Windows Security Center Alerts."

Tried checking the box and unchecking the box and the pop up keeps coming up. My Norton program is screwed up and will not allow me to turn on the virus protection. Not sure about this just yet.

So, where do I go now? Do I need to re-download hijackthis? Thank you again.

Try running HijackThis again to see if it works now. If not, then redownload it.

Regarding Norton, it might be disabled somehow. I would close it completely (do not let it run at startup) and download AVG Antivirus. Install it and make sure to check for updates. We recommend using AVG over Norton, but it's your preference. Leave AVG for now since Norton doesn't work.

Try giving us all the new logs (not just the HijackThis).

I AM AT YOUR MERCY AS TO WHAT TO DO NOW.... ALSO, RE: NORTON, I HAVE UNSUCESSFULLY ATTEMPTED TO REMOVE NORTON FROM MY COMPUTER (I DID DOWNLOAD AVG) SO I STILL GET THE SAME MESSAGES UPON BOOTING UP EVEN THOUGH I DID REMOVE SOME OF ITS COMPONENTS. THANK YOU, CUBACK

Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

This hijack may take a couple of tries to remove it. If you have any questions during this process, please ask us (just don't reboot - unless the instructions say so).

1. Run VX2Finder(126) again.

2. Run CleanUp! program and click on CleanUp button. Say NO when it asks you to reboot/logoff. Check your Downloaded Program Files folder for any program that you do not recongized and remove anything in question.

3. Delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guard.tmp <<< If it exists!

Deelete this entire folder:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\WinTools\

4. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. After that's done, go to:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\Time Zones]

Find the entry key (on the right pane) for m446lehs1h46.dll. Click on it and delete it. Close Regedit.

5. Run KillBox now.
a) Click on the 'Replace on Reboot' button and check the both underneath it.
b) Check 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File.'
c)Check 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' for each file if it's available

Copy and paste each of the following (one by one) into the top line and hit the X button for each one (when it asks you if you want to reboot, click NO until the last file):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\spOrder.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tgext.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\busena.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dolsp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\m446lehs1h46.dll

6. On the reboot hit the F8 key (repeatedly until a menu shows up) to enter Safe Mode.

7. Run HijackThis and do a scan. Check and fix the following:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

Close HijackThis and run Hoster. Click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

Run CleanUp! program again and clean everything. Say Yes when it asks you to reboot/logoff.

8. Reboot into Normal Mode and run HijackThis. See if the O1 entries are still in HijackThis. If they are still there, go to c:\windows\system32\ and sort the files by date. There will/should be two new DLLs.
-- If those O1 entries did return in HijackThis, paste those two files into KillBox (in Step 5 above) and kill them. Just follow through the rest of the procedures (Steps 5 - 8) like before. Make sure NOT to reboot until you deleted those two files (otherwise the names will change again).

After all that's done (or if you need more help), give us a new set of logs (2 PV logs, 1 notify.txt log, 1 VX2Finder log and 1 HijackThis log).

Ran Into First Problem...

Ran into a problem under No. 3 When trying to delete WinTools, window popped up stating CANNOT DELETE WToolsA.exe...it is being used by another program. I was doing this in Windows Explorer..is there a better way to delete files?

Also, after performing steps 1-6, will I be able to run HiJackThis? Because even after I reloaded it, it still comes up with an error message and windows automatically closes it.

I have to sign off for tonite, but I will leave my computer booted up, however even if I am not online I still get pop ups coming up. Will I need to start back over if I get pop ups while computer is on, or while performing any of the procedures?

Thanx, CUBACK!!!

#14 ·
You have to do a ctrl+alt+del and end that WToolsA.exe process and then delete WinTools.

Once you shutdown or restart (before a fix instruction is made here), we will need another new set of logs. So try to keep your computer on when you post a new set of logs. We will need another new set now that you did the fixes.

What is the HijackThis error message it's giving you? Any filename mentioned there?

Okay, I'm feeling Pretty Dumb Now

Still can't delete WToolsA.exe. Tried to ctrl-alt-delete to end process and it says "operation could not be completed, access denied". What do I do now?

Also, about HijackThis...when I tried running it a Microsoft pop up box came up stating "HijackThis has encountered a problem and needs to close.." and then asks me to send error report to Microsoft. It happened when the scan was at 023-NT Services... if this is any help.

So is there another program I should download and run in place of this or do I go on without it? And if I can't delete the WinTools folder, where do I go now?

I am sorry this is so much trouble for you, but I certainly appreciate all of the assistance.

Cuback

Sorry about that. We must have missed it (forgot about that problem).

Look for more details on that error. You can usually see what filename and error number it's giving you. Go to Details or More Info link/button for that error. No need to send it to Microsoft. Post the filename in question and the error # if available.

Error Message for HijackThis

I guess you are familiar with the Microsoft error messages. It happens when the scan reads up top 023-NT Services... It shoes ERROR SIGNATURE: AppName: hijackthis.exe AppVer: 1.99.0.0 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 0000316c

Upon clicking Technical info button, of course it gives a whole book practically, but the first section reads: Exception Information: Code: 0x0000005 Flags: 0x00000000
Record: 0x0000000000000000 Address: 0x000000007c90316c

And then the bottom box reads: The following files will be included in error :
C:\DOCUME~1\Cheryl\LOCALS~1\Temp\5c6c_appcompat.txt

This is all Greek to me but maybe help to you? Thanx.

How about running the older version? Will it give you the same error?

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis1982.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

Is the log file you saved from the HijackThis scan called hijackthis.log? It must be exactly as spelled as hijackthis.log to work. If it's giving you trouble, just give us the regular hijackthis.log without the analyzer result.
