[SOLVED] Not enough memory??????

In 30 years of using a personal computer, I've never encountered this.

I have an old pack of ClickArt CDs with thousands of small pictures on them, most in .WMF format. I have never had a problem putting the pictures in a Word document (I still use Word 2000) by clicking "Insert, Picture, from file", locating the file on the CD, and clicking it. Tried that today and before selecting the file (just clicked the folder), I got a message saying that there was not enough memory to perform the operation, and it locked (or crashed?) Word. Only way to get out of it was via Task Manager/End Task.

Wondering if that would happen if the pictures were on my HDD instead of the optical drive, I copied a large number of picture files to a folder in My Pictures, then tried to do the same thing: insert a picture from there into a Word document. Worked perfectly.

Thinking that perhaps there was something wrong with the installation of Word, I uninstalled MS Office (Professional) altogether, reinstalled it, and again tried inserting a picture directly from the CD. Same thing happened; not enough memory, Word freezes.

My computer has 16GB of RAM. The HDD on which I store my working files has a 1TB capacity, of which 972GB are still free. Have tried substantially increasing the page file size on C:, which is an SSD. Did nothing.

So what's causing this strange behavior?

P.S. Not sure this is a Win 7 problem, but couldn't think of anywhere else to put it.

Re: Not enough memory??????

Probably a virtual memory issue but it might be that 'something' isn't recognising the full RAM/VM disk space amount correctly (16GB of RAM in 1999/200 when that Word version was issued?). Have you tried since a reboot?

Rebooted after each change in the page file size. Still doesn't work. Never had this problem with my XP computer, which I replaced only 1.5 years ago with this (unbelievably fast!) Micro Express/Haswell Core i7/SSD/16GB of RAM. But you may be right that Win 7 and a very old version of Office don't always work well together.

Anything in the Application/System event logs that might give us a clue?
Have no idea. Looked at an Applications log and found several instances of the following multiple times:

Re: Not enough memory??????

Always keep in mind that the earlier versions of programs used lower memory registers and often those are "full" compared to the higher registers which may be wide open. Have you attempted to use the compatibility settings for the Word app? If you navigate to the program directory for office and right click on the winword.exe (or whatever the actual word program executable is), look at the compatibility tab and see if changing those options helps.

It was already set to run using Win XP SP3, and as I said, it ran perfectly on my old XP computer. I tried changing it to Win 7. Did nothing. Still freezes everything as soon as I click on a folder on the CD.

Re: Not enough memory??????

Was W7 installed from a non-MS DVD?

This looks like it refers to your WMI error: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2545227
Have no idea how Win 7 was installed. It came pre-installed with the computer. And unlike the vast majority of computers, this one came with a genuine Microsoft Win 7 DVD. However, it's unlikely that Micro Express uses a DVD to install Windows; they probably do it by some mass-production method.

I tried the Fix it. It ran and said it was successful, but I again tried to insert a picture directly from the CD, and it crashed Word/froze computer as usual.

Re: Not enough memory??????

But did it fix the creation of that WMI error message after boot (it's all the Fixit was for, unrelated to your main issue)?

Have no idea if the error message I get is a WMI message. The full message is "An unexpected error occurred: Not enough memory available to complete operation. Close other programs to make more memory available, then try again." The fact that it suggests closing other programs says to me that it's trying to use RAM, which I have plenty of.

Re: Not enough memory??????

Your WMI error was in #6 :)

As we tried to explain earlier, your main issue seems to stem from some older component that doesn't 'understand' the large amounts of RAM and drive space available now. That something seems to kick in only when trying to use files directly from CD, yes?

What's the CD called, what does it contain, is there any auto loading software that activates when you load the disc?

That's correct; the "something" kicks in only when trying to insert pix directly from the CD. The CD contains only a large number of .WMF images. There is no "auto loading" software on the CD.

Since there seems to be no other explanation for this behavior, I think you're right that it's "some older component". The older component is Word 2000. The frustrating part of this is that I never had any problems with XP, and would think that Win 7 would be able to accommodate software that ran perfectly on XP. But I guess not. I have an Office 2010 Pro DVD, so can install it on this computer, and I guess that's what I'm going to have to do to get this to work. Problem is, I absolutely HATE the versions of Office after 2003 because of the "ribbon", which (a) takes up a HUGE amount of vertical space on laptops and (b) makes you play he** trying to find what you want in that ribbon. Office 2000/2003 took up only a tiny amount of vertical space, and you could find everything in an instant.

Re: Not enough memory??????

It's possible that Word (or maybe your AV?) is trying to create/access virtual memory space on the source disk during the read process.

As you seem to have plenty of HDD space, I would copy over all the data to that as a workaround.

That's what I'm going to do, since it works fine. Question remains, why? The file I'm inserting is the same size as it was on the CD. Why does the system bulk ONLY when you try to insert the file from another (optical) drive. Makes no sense.

My AV is Avast. Among the many things I tried when attempting to insert a picture from the CD was disable Avast. Made no difference.

Re: Not enough memory??????

Obviously the simple solution is to copy the files to the HD, but like you I'm wondering what's going on. I'm assuming you didn't use the same hardware when you were running XP. I'd be curious if you create a CD containing some of the same files, would the result be the same? If you took a CD with other pictures on it and tried to insert them would it do that same? I'm wondering if there's possibly a driver issue with the drive or controller that's causing the issue only with the older program(s) addressing it? Last thing is, does this happen if you try it in safe mode?

I tried it in Safe Mode; didn't work. Now, after I rearrange all my SHORTCUTS that Safe Mode always bunches together :banghead:, I'll try creating a CD with some of the picture files.

BTW, love your footer -- the quote from Ron Reagan. I wish there were some way to clone him and get him back in the White House.

Re: Not enough memory??????

Hi, this could be as simple as a corrupt universal template (normal.dot) if you delete it (word must be closed to do this) word will recreate a new one when opened.

Normal.dot is a hidden file so folder options "view" show hidden files and folders, and uncheck hide protected system files and folders...

Navigate to :-

C:\Users\Your user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates, right click select delete.

Well, actually the Templates folder does not exist on C: because it's an SSD. All working files are on E:. Went to E:, deleted Nomal.dot, then tried inserting the picture in Word. Did the same thing -- not enough memory, Word frozen.

Re: Not enough memory??????

Tried dumping the .WMF picture files to a CD-RW that I set up to work like a USB flash drive, but could not write anything to it. Kept saying "Insert a writable disk". ???

Re: Not enough memory??????

Scrub the previous message. Instead of formatting the CD, I just burned about 30 of the picture files to it, then opened Word, Insert, Picture, from file, picked a picture directly from the CD. . . and it worked perfectly!!!!

So why does it NOT work when the files are on the original CD, but DOES work if I copy the files to my HDD, then burn them to a CD-RW and insert the files from that CD?

Re: Not enough memory??????

Ya' know, me thinks I'm going to give up on this. I have Office 2010 on my laptop and tried inserting a picture from the same CD into Word there, and (of course) it works perfectly. I also tried setting XP SP3 Windows compatibility mode for MS Word 2000 on my desktop, but it did not solve the problem.

There comes a time when not every feature of a very old program will work with a modern OS. I think I've reached that point with Office 2000, and it's probably time to hold my nose, install Office 2010 on my desktop, and endure the long learning curve that ensues when you move from early versions of Office to "ribboned" Office. I hate the ribbon because it takes forever to find what you want, but I don't have much choice.

Thanks to everyone for your help.
