Problem: Wireless
OS: Windows 7
ISP: Virgin Media
Broadband: Cable
Security Software: Windows Security Essentials

I recently bought a Ralink MT7601 Wireless adapter, and it works fine except the rather large problem of no allowing Steam to function properly.

I found a page on the Steam forums that explains the problem and why it happens, and apparently it's because of a faulty wireless driver.

I identified that it was my wireless driver by deleting it in device manager, then reinstalling with the CD that came with my wireless adapter. In Windows Update, it's called "Ralink - WLAN - ASUS 802.11n Network Adapter", but someone in that thread above says it's titled differently depending on which wireless adapter you actually have.
If the driver that came with my card is faulty, what driver can I use that won't ruin my usage of steam?

Welcome to TSF!

You would go to the company's web site and see if they have a updated driver you can download and install.
Thank you.

Since the Wireless Adapter was made, Ralink have been bought out by some company called Mediatek. I found this page, but I'm not very computer literate and I don't know which of those I need if any.

no drivers for the mt7601 there.
not finding any drives for a MT7601

drivers for a RT7601 are found here along with a bad review;

Ralink 802.11n Wireless LAN Card - Free download and software reviews - CNET Download.com
That driver didn't do any better. I think it's time to give up on this adapter entirely.

Is there any chance that you could return it as unsuitable and get something else ?
I'm doing so now, I have carefully selected a new Wireless adapter with lots of shining reviews.

Thank you both for your input, I think I should definitely consider this a lost cause.
