My extra computer is randomly restarting with the blue screen thing.

I have disables automatic restarts under startup and recovery.
I ran chkdsk but it would only run the thing it does when windows is running.
I have tried to install windows again but it freezes up before i can.

On the computer having problems i ran memtest 86 and found around a million errors after running it for a while. So i figured the ram was bad. so I bought some new g skill ram and the same problems occurred. Then I put the ram in my main computer and ran memtest 86 with this computer and got no errors.

so what could throw off memtest 86 thinking there is are errors in the ram when there is not. Because it is most likely what the problem is.

specs on broken comp
120 gb hd ide
athlon 1.9ghz processor
1gb gkill 184 pin ram
geforce fx 1600
old 250watt psu that came with my hp.
could it be the mother boad?

Make sure that you only run Memtest86 on one stick at a time. If it finds errors on two sticks they may be false positives.

Re: memtest 86 pass on one computer fails on another.

I'm getting errors in memtest on one machine, but not when I put the same memory in another, what does that mean?

It can mean one of two things:
- The machine that is giving the errors is defective. Errors don't just originate from the memory module itself, but can also be caused by defects in the CPU, chipset, motherboard, PSU and even by timing issues introduced by any other component in the machine.
- The machine giving the errors is imposing stricter timing than the other which the memory module simply can't cope with. If the module should work with the machine according to its specifications then it most likely is defective.

You may want to read all the info and see what relevant

What motherboard do you have?
What speed ram?

The 250W psu may be the problem but answer my questions and we will see

the mother board is a ecs 741gx-m2 link
the ram is ddr 400 184 pinn
the power supply is a weak but it has worked for years with the same set up maybe it degraded.

Re: memtest 86 pass on one computer fails on another.

Go into bios and set the ram clock to 166mhz try and load windows if it don't work set the ram clock to 133mhz and try again.

If you know what cpu you have other than 1.9 that would really help, I have to go right now but will be in later this evening and I will explain why you should try that.

But still Matt is right on, the psu should be changed, we may just be chasing our tail with a 250W in there thats that old

i THINK I FOUND THE PROBLEM LOOKING THROUGH THE BIOS I noticed that the cpu is at 118c. does this mean processor is bad or could something else make the processor get this hot. the processor was clocked at 166 when i brought it to 133 temps went to 82 and then when i brought it down to 100 temps went to 71. could a old bad power supply make the processor run very hot.

Is the fan on the Processor heatsink running? . . is the case full of dust bunies? . . Have you removed and replaced the heatsink recently? . .

Re: memtest 86 pass on one computer fails on another.

If the processor was really that hot it would have literally fried. I think the BIOS reading is wrong. My bet is on the PSU as the problem. Do you have another PSU you can try?

Re: memtest 86 pass on one computer fails on another.

I had an extra 500watt psu for a computer i am building my roommate. I put it in but it really didn't make much of a difference. the temps maybe when down a few degrees. so them i decided to put new thermal past on the processor.
this was not the best idea because now at 100hz clock the chip is at around 97c ,maybe the thermal past isnt set yet but this guy is running hot!!! I have been using HMonitor and speedfan and they both say it is very hot.

is CPU broken

Re: memtest 86 pass on one computer fails on another.

No the cpu ain't broken, you most likely did not put the thermal paste on correct.

Instructions here http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

Also and this is important,,,,,,,, It is possible to install a socket A cpu heatsink 180 degrees in the wrong direction,,,,,,,, look at the bottom of the heatsink the step in the heatsink must face the part of the cpu socket that says 462.

Remove the heatsink, clean and reapply the thermal paste following the instructions, make sure the heatsink is mounted correctly and down tight.
