Retarded/crap/slow Keyboard Response

Hey all, I'm new so this is my first question. It's quite important actually because I like to play keyboard required games like Stepmania and Space Cadet Pinball (freeware download). Obviously I'm using Vista. I saw on a website that it's the registry's problem that it sometimes stops for about half a second then bursts out with loads of typing about a second later.

Is this peice of registry correct?

. . . it sometimes stops for about half a second then bursts out with loads of typing about a second later. . .

Hi deadevil...

A few questions for clarification purposes, please. . .

1. Is it just the game(s) that freezes (stops), or does your entire system freeze (i.e., can you perform any other Vista functions during these 'freeze" periods)?
2. Are both games listed in your first post exhibiting the symptoms that you describe?
3. Are there others?
4. The "loads of typing" that you describe, is this keyboard input that you have entered, or is it random?
5. Do you have the registry path in which the imaged entries are located?

I would like to see your system specs, if that's OK with you. A quick way that I know of is:
>> Start >> type "msinfo32.exe" (no quotes) in the Start Search box (cursor defaults)

Please post link to it.

Thanks... regards...

1. No, my entire system doesn't freeze in any way. I only say "Freeze" because that's how it looks when I'm playing Pinball, the way the bars don't move, but then flips up when the balls already gone down. I can mostly see this problem in games like Stepmania and Pinball. It also does it in the online game Flash Flash Revolution (which is Stepmania but online).

2. Yes, those two games are the games that I find easiest to see the problem, if I understood your question correct.

3. Like I said above, www.flashflashrevolution.com shows the problem like Stepmania but the notes are a little easier to hit making it a tiny bit more harder to see.

4. It's random, meaning it will happan at any time. It doesn't really show much when typing, only when I'm looking really close to the monitor and when it stops typing for half a second and then goes quickly to make up for the stop time. Or to put it simply - constantly pressing "Num Lock" and looking at the light going on and off and testing the accuracy.

5. Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters - - That's it, isn't it?

And finally, here you go:

OS Name Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium

Edit:

Here's another way of putting it for Pinball: At a random time when I press the key to make the flipper shoot the ball up, it delays. And then it flips when the ball has already gone down

Hi Jdeadevil,
Apologies for spelling your name incorrectly on my last post.

Obviously, I have received your reply. Let me see what I can find out. Honestly, when it comes to computer games, I ask my 6, 9, and 17 year-olds about them. No correlation with age directed at you, I assure you. I have never played video games myself, as I always had enough fun reading Tax Law books! (sometimes).

I have kids school pickup followed by football practice with the 6 yr-old this afternoon and won't be back until tonight.

Regards. . .

Well I know it's my computer and not my keyboard because I've 'installed' the Advent ADE-AD2 wireless keyboard, it'll take some getting used to. But It's kind of got the same problem. I think Vista might just be **** when it comes to keyboards.

Hi Jdeadevil -

Thanks for providing answers to my questions as they helped a great deal.

I looked further into your ADE-AD2 keyboard problems and found others are having trouble with it as well, specifically while using it with Vista. There is an incompatablility issue with Vista. Some features (keys/ key combinations) work perfectly while others either do not or they behave in an unpredictable manner. Here are two threads regarding problems with the ADE-AD2 keyboard from this very forum:

Earlier today I thought this information would be enough to completely solve this thread. However, at the time you wrote your original January 23, 2008, you were using a different keyboard that produced similar problems and therefore came to the conclusion that Vista was the culprit. Vista may be the common link beween the two, but the ADE-AD2 keyboard manufacturer apparantly did not provide a driver update to their customer base in a timely fashion prior to the release of Vista. We now should take a look at your other keyboard and see if this is a driver related issue as well. Would you provide the manufacturer, model number, and any other data available on your old keyboard? Did it come with the computer? I am far from a hardware tech, but I'll take a look and see what I can find out.

Finally, the registry entries you asked about in your post are contained in the registry key

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters

The REG_DWORD entries are:

PollingIterations
PollingIterationsMaximum
PollStatusIterations
ResendIterations

These keys are related to keyboard interupts and timeouts. The last MS Technet update that I can locate on them is from Windows Server 2003, an NT based system, as is Vista. I am not well versed in the hardware arena, so here are the MS Technet links:

Hope this helps!

Hmm, that's strange. Those links you put at the bottom of the post mensioned the exact same registry settings as I have. But I saw that when you install a new device, it'll work on some other entries altogether. It's ResendIterations that tells them to go to another registry bit. Hmm, strange.

But by the looks of it I have it fine. I think it might be something to do with the developers not updating the registry whilst busy with everything else so I think I'll just have to wait for a patch of some sort to come out.

Thanks for the help. :)

Yes... I have the same registry entries in every laptop covering various versions of Vista. And, yes... parts of the registry do in fact update other areas of the registry which could be updated from user input, files, etc... There are actually several different *\CurrentControlSets\* in HKLM\SYSTEM.

And you're right... you do have it fine and their will most liky be a patch. The probable difference here (XP v. VISTA) is that XP's registry is updated in a different path of HKLM than Vista in this case. You just may be able to find these same names in XP, look to see what their values are then change them in Vista.

Good Luck. . .

sorry but i think your being a bit extreme when ya talk about registry edits where is your usb receiver cos I had a similar problem until I placed it about 10 cm in front of the keyboard and mouse similarly to my previous logitech keyboard and it now works without any problems other than it wont allow me to flip my windows with the windows button and tab
