I have an old laptop that will not power up at all and i have important data on the hard drive. the drive says its a Hitachi Travelstar N155 ,I ordered a couple transfer device from amazon and neither one had adapters that would connect. instead of a pin style connector this drive has a male blade style connector . did a web search and the only info i could find called it an IDE type connector but any of the stores around my area the clerks looked at me like i was crazy and did not even know that there were such things as hard drive transfer devices. can anybody suggest a transfer device that will connect to blade style and not just pin style connectors

th

thanks for info. i followed the link and unfortunately the above unit also only has pin style connectors and my drive has a 20 pin blade style connector and the way the laptop is made i cant remove the plug in from the laptop because it connects directly to the motherboard and not a cable

You will have to order the adapter online, local stores will not carry it

Be aware this type of drive is over 25 years old, so chances that it starts up and you can view files on it are slim, but give it a shot anyways.
thanks for info ,the laptop it came out of is about 15 years old , as long as i can pull 2 meta data files i need to rebuild my toy website ill be happy

What is the Make and Model# of the Laptop?

Any IDE or SATA drive for that matter, should pull out and unplug from the laptop. It may be in a HDD enclosure. It may have an Adapter on the pins on the HDD, as pictured in the link. Once the drive is detached from the laptop and the enclosure, if any, you can remove that laptop adapter by pulling on it.

Both adapters linked can attach to any 2.5" or 3.5" IDE, or SATA HDD.

thanks for reply but the adapter is soldered directly to the motherboard on the laptop.the above picture is very similar to what my drive looks like except on each end there is a thicker Seperator. i found a little info a 13 yr old tech post saying i need whats called a ATA-5 adapter but cant find them. everytime i try and search i get all the newer adapters
the computer is a 15 yr old averatec c3500 series , It was given to me about 10 years back by a former employer if i could fix the power input. the keyboard was no good and i had to use an external monitor but it worked. but when i went to fire it up couple weeks ago nothing works i get power to the MB but will not start. i read an article that there is suppose to be a hard drive read you can plug into a dead computer but i can't find it again.

Thanks for video but this laptop is 100% different then the 3500 series. with the 3500 series on the bottom of the unit there is a panel with 1 screw covering the drive. then the drive itself is held in with 4 tiny screws .remove the screws and just pull the unit out by the tabs, pulls straight up,no cables just direct connection onto motherboard. would have been great if there were a cable then i would not have this problems and could just remove the cable and go from there . according to what little info i can find i need an ATA-5 connecter to convert from this type of IDE connecter to standard ide connecter

could you post a picture of the drive of the connector end.
Once you remove the drive, take a picture of the connector end of the drive with a smartphone or camera and attach it in your next post.

As stated previously, this has an adapter on it. Firmly grasp it and pull back from the drive and the adapter will come loose and the IDE pins will be revealed.
ok ill take the drive apart further but this is the first i have heard about another adapter , there was not even info on the hitachi site.

You are not going to be disassembling the HDD any further, you are just going to pull off the adapter hiding the pins.

I mentioned it previously. This is not an adapter from Hitachi, it is an adapter to connect to your laptop.
Thanks for this information ,i must have missed your earlier post . but thanks to this one i took the outer casing off the drive and pulled and found the pins like you mentioned, since i have to go to town tomorrow ill go to best buy and find what i need. i hope my data is still there so i can get my website meta data

IDE (PATA/ATA/EIDE) drives have not been in use for over 20 years now so Brick and Mortar stores like Best Buy will not carry the USB Adapter you are looking for. We have previously linked 2 different adapters in this thread that you can order online.

I hope when you say you "took off the outer casing" you didn't unscrew the Torx screws on the top of the HDD exposing the platters inside?? You just removed the removable Hard Drive tray? These drives are sealed in a Clean Room to avoid dust contamination and once the Torx screws are unscrewed and the lid has been removed and opened to the air, the drive cannot be used again.

no spunk i did not take the drive unit itself apart. im used to working on PC's, with cables attached to the drives and in my over 40 yrs working with computer electronics this is the first time i have encountered a hard drive this small . i was given this laptop about 10 years back because there was a break on the motherboard at the power input and ive kept it running this long . i thought i had transferred my data to a couple other drives but when i checked them all i found was music files. i also ment to transfer that data awhile ago to my tab or phone for safe keeping but got side tracked. the data im hoping is still in tacked i spent over 6 months building and coding my own website and then the company i was using sent me a message saying we are changing the structure of our platform and wanted to charge high monthly fees for very little bandwidth. i just found a place that i can sell my old toys on with very low fee's ,but i can't remember my own product descriptions anymore . i know amazon carries the devices and since im going to be in town today it does not hurt to check best buy or even staples since the closest fry's is 5 hours away. if i can't find local ill just order on amazon. Thank you for your assistance
