Error when creating firewall rule - IP Address Not Valid

Hello,

I am working on a project to create a VPN configuration (the particular VPN will be WireGuard) file so I can access my NAS Drive in my apartment when I am away from home and traveling with my laptop. I am attempting to do what I think is the first step of the process which is creating a firewall rule. I am using the firewall built into the router and not using any other firewalls on any other devices. When I enter the IP address for my NAS Drive which is a static IP address I created myself and works within my own home network, I get the following error:

IP Address (it gives the static IP address of my NAS) Not Valid

It does not have a problem with the "remote IP address" which I obtained off of the NAS Drive software itself.

Here's my Equipment and Environment:

ISP = Optimum/Altice
External/Secondary Testing ISP: T-Mobile Hotspot on my iPhone 13 Pro Max
Separate Modem and Router

Modem: Arris Surfboard S33
Router: ASUS RT-AX3000
QNAP NAS Enclosure: TS-932PX

I called ASUS to talk to them and essentially, their support instantly tells you the issue is "more advanced" and then they "escalate" it to the next team for a call back "within 24-48 hours"....they act like a glorified message center.

I already created a VPN profile/configuration file and tested the VPN and have run the VPN and when I switch to the HotSpot on my iPhone (T-Mobile) and activate the VPN my router lights up showing I am connected to it, but yet I cannot get my NAS to show up to start mapping network drives.

All help appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely,

The reason I didn’t post it in the water guard forum is for two reasons first, I didn’t know there was one and thank you for recommending that and the second was this wasn’t a wire guard issue per se I was getting this error message when trying to create a firewall rules on the router itself. As you can tell, I’m not very good with networking, but I’m really struggling to try to learn it. I have a feeling I am getting a bunch of different things confused in how to make this happen and work.

The firewall rule I was trying to create and getting the error for the local IP address was because I was thinking that was the location on the router that I do some sort of port forwarding which I may be wrong about. I’m going to look into it more later today. The external IP address of my NAS starts out with 74.88.x and the internal IP, which is a static IP I set my self is 192.168 x and it is the internal IP address that it’s stating when it gives that error because it says the IP address and it gives the number is invalid so I know it’s the internal not the external one.

I have looked at the configuration area for setting up the VPN on the router and it gives multiple types of VPN that you can set up and the one that was chosen last time that I was able to get to work with a friend with great difficulty was wire guard. When looking at the settings for that particular VPN I don’t see where I can set up the IP addressing and like stated, I was also thinking that I had to do some port forwarding. So again, I felt that the VPN was secondary, and that I was trying to do things on the router itself making this not a traditional VPN issue, but more of a router issue.

I will update this posting later today when I do more investigation because right now it is 4:10 AM and I need to get some sleep.
