DVD-RAM vs DVD RW

Hi.
I'm not sure which one I should choose.
I need a disc which store my regular backup and item collection.
The contents of the disc will be updated, say, quarterly or monthly.

The disc must be reliable and can keep the contents intact.

Q:
1) Which disc suits my need best? Any advice?

2) How reliable is DVD-RAM and DVD+/-RW?

3) What brand/model of DVD disc do you recommend?

Thank you.

DVD-RAM
- A DVD format wherein DVD-RAM discs can be recorded and erased repeatedly but are only compatible with devices manufactured by the companies that support the DVD-RAM format. DVD-RAM discs are typically housed in cartridges. DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM are supported by Panasonic, Toshiba, Apple Computer, Hitachi, NEC, Pioneer, Samsung and Sharp.

DVDRW
Short for DVD+ReWritable, a re-recordable DVD format similar to CD-RW. The data on a DVD+RW disc can be erased and recorded over numerous times without damaging the medium. DVD+RW and DVD+R formats are supported by Philips, Sony, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Ricoh, Yamaha and others.

In my opinion, either type will suit you just fine. As long as you keep them out of the Sun, don't scratch them, Etc, Etc.

However, DVD-RAM is going to probably be more of a hassle to use, since it's less supported, some might even say, "Dead". It'll be harder to find disks, and even then, they'll be more expensive. Drives have the same story. All in all, DVD+RW is what I use for my backup, and will continue to use until something better comes along. It's affordable, reliable, convienent, the list goes on.

If these backups are REALLY mission-critical, like, manage your Small buisiness, Etc, then I would suggest a small, external Hard-Drive. They have the best reliability, from what I have found.

Hope that helps.
