Hi,

It has been so frustating, I have spend hours and hours with HP support trying to debug this. They do the usual cleaning up temp files cleanup, restore but no real insight or fix to the problem. I get a BSOD on startup and no crashdump (memory.dmp or minidump) with the following error.

STOP: 0x0000007E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF800026080C2, 0xFFFFFA6002B989D8, 0xFFFFFA60001898380)

There was no new software or hardware added to the system in recent months. I am at my wits end, can anyone shed light on this horrendous problem?

Regards

Since no BSOD in SAFEMODE, go into SAFEMODE w/ Networking (if possible) and run the batch script to gather system info - SKIP STEP #4 for now -

http://www.techsupportforum.com/1871981-post2.html

Zip up the output folder and attach to your next post -- pls send me a PM.

For info the BSOD crash info that you posted - bugcheck - 0x7e, 1st parm = NTSTATUS (exception) code = 0xc0000005

0x7e = a system thread threw an exception (error)

0xc0000005 = the exeption = memory access violation

Since normal Vista boot = BSOD and Safemode NOT = BSOD, we are probably dealing with a software issue here.

Do you still have the nice Internet Security trial app that HP pre-installed for you? That is my usual suspect when I see 0xc0000005 exceptoions flying around.

Regards. . .

Another way I have solved this problem is to boot in to safemode. Go to "Run", in Vista hit the windows key and R, type msconfig, go to the startup tab. Click on disable all and then apply. You will then be prompted to restart after you close the system config utility. Restart in normal mode, if you don't get the BSOD go to msconfig again and check the first 3 items and make a note of them. Restart and continue the process until you get the BSOD, then go back to safemode go to msconfig again and uncheck one of the last 3 items you checked before the BSOD until you find the culprit. Post back what it is!

There's at least 3 KB articles that could apply to this issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930979 (if using BitLocker)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950570
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941021
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/965494

Most of these were fixed with Service Packs 1 and 2. What level of service pack do you have installed on this system?

How soon in the startup does the crash occur? Before the Windows splash screen, before the OS selection menu, before the logon, before your desktop develops? More info on the boot sequence here: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/boot-sequence---troubleshooting.html

Please follow the instructions here to ensure that your system is set to capture minidumps: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/change-dump-file-location-size-to-minidumps.html

While you're waiting for a reply from us, please start up on the things in this list of preliminaries: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/bsod-troubleshooting-preliminaries.html

Hi,
I had another BSOD yesterday as soon as I started my machine, what's new. Out of curiosity I pressed a F9 key for diagnostics and the memory test failed with a BNOME-1 error. I called HP support and he made me open the computer and switch the memory cards after vacuming them for dust (I kid you not!). After rebooting I got the same error in diagnostics. So, HP is asked me to send the computer to their service center so that they can replace the memory and if required the motherboard as well.
I am waiting for them to send me the prepaid FedEx box so that I can send the CPU to them. Needless to say, I spend most of my day yesterday backing up my personal files as they will wipe it off and reset to factory settings.

What a nightmare!! I will update this post when I get back my PC.

I hear that HP PCs are having issues, dunno if this is Vista or just cheap components. I wonder if owners of DELL & IBM PCs with Vista 64bit are having better luck.

Thanks for all your help.

I have sent my PC to HP repair center twice and they have re-imaged it to factory specs. But now I am getting a BIOME-1 error in hardware diagnostics. Does anyone heard of this before, seems like it is a Memory error (HP just replaced the memory with 2Gb+2GB+1GB+1GB it used to be 1.5GB x 4) can this cause the BIOME-1 error?

Yes, I used the memtest86+ for 11 hours, it ran for 12 Passes. No error reported. Does this mean that the memory sticks are fine but a problem with the motherboad? This one has a Benecia mobo made by Pegatron Corp. This is driving me nuts.... I need to tell HP something so that they can do something to get the PC back to normal.

My wife's HP started getting the blue screen of death last night and diagnostics came up with the biome-1 error message. I contacted HP tech support on my machine and got online with a helpful fellow named Alfred. This may be an error message generated by a variety of causes, but it turns out that my wife's issue had nothing to do with hardware at all. Some system files had gotten corrupted and a system restore to an earlier point in the day fixed the problem.

As it turns out, I was prematurely optimistic on this and it did, in fact, turn out to be hardware. I was some bad memory that was causing intermittent failures. I ran the pc diagnostics that came with the computer and there were about four tests that we failing. I called customer support (the computer was still under warranty) and they sent me a carton to ship it to them. I shipped it on Monday and had it back fixed on Friday. They replaced one 2 gig dimm. Memory is cheap right now, if your machine is not in warranty and it fails the diagnostics, I would suggest buying a dimm and change the new one with the existing one at a time until you find the bad one.

I have a HP Pavillion desktop, about two years old, that has a similar problem. Has anyone found the solution? I'll try again to start it in safe mode, but it has shutdown on it's own, even in safe mode.

I took a picture of the BSOD, cause it only lasts a few seconds. I'm not sure the screen shows anything that can help?

Thanks - Let me know if anyone knows what I can do.
