Hi guys,

I purchased a Seagate 1TB HD as a media storage device about 3 months ago, a few days ago it had an unfortunate fall of about 2 feet and since then hasn't been operating properly. I primarily used this drive to watch/listen to music and movies through my PS3.

The drive powers up fine and makes no strange noises, on the PS3 I can get into the drives various folders and browse around. I cannot watch or listen to anything and it works very, very slowly.

When plugged into the PC I cannot enter the drive to explore it, instead the drive prompts me to format it. I would like to recover the data as it's near 800GB's or so of things I don't want to spend my time backing up and ripping again.

I've trolled through various forums and google searched my way around trying to find a solution to my problem but have come up with some dead ends.

If anyone has some leads on which direction I should head or a solution in trying to recover the data off the drive it'd be greatly appreciated.

It appears the drive is being recgnized, you may or may not be able to recover the data. Most likely the fall caused head damage, or the spindle has gotten bent. Best bet would be to download the demos of r-studio or getdataback and see if either of those can recognize your files, then copy them out to another disk. Most likely your external has suffered physical damage. Pro recovery on 1TB drives starts at $1000 - $1200 and could go as high as $2000 - and you will still just get your files back on another drive - your's will probably never be a stable useable drive.
