XP Upgrade from ME

1360 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  cleon1983
I would like to upgrade to XP Home Edition from a preloaded ME (PC was bought with ME). I would like ME totally taken off and have only XP. Will the 'Upgrade' edition do it for me or should I buy the whole XP? What would be the best way to get ME off if don't go with the upgrade. fdisk or something?

Welcome to the forums cleon1983

First what kind of computer are we talking about here a custom built type or a store bought one like HP.

The XP upgrade can be loaded as a clean install if you have your version of ME on CD to show as verification of owning a previous version during the install.

When we get these two answered we can go on from there......:D
Thanks.

It's a store bought HP Pav 7850. I have the 'system recovery' disks that contain the sw for ME.
I don't know if the OEM ME is a valid upgrade, have you checked the package of an upgrade version of XP closely to see what they say?

I have my doubts about that too.
The microsoft XP web pages say that you can upgrade from ME. It doesn't specify if the ME is from an upgrade or original.
The thing you don't understand is that OEM (in your case Hewlett Packard) versions of windows are proprietary to whichever brand of computer they are run on. The windows XP upgrade might not see the OEM copy as valid.
You will need the full XP version...

If you can find a retail version of ME or 98se that will work too. Go to www.blackviper.com for pictured instructions. When XP starts the installation after downloading needed files, you will need to insert the retail ME or 98 disk to get the authorization key. It will then ask you to reinsert the XP disk and continue with a clean install. You cannot do that with your present ME OEM disk.
After extensive research, I put the 'Upgrade' on. I was leary about doing it, but it's been running great since I put it on about 6 days ago. ME couldn't manage all my external stuff without reboots and such (printers, scanner, digital camera, digital camcorder, palm pilot, webcam,.....). The XP Upgrade has handled everything great. I loaded the ME recovery disks just prior to loading XP just to get it my system back to normal. This seemed to help. I lost a few programs, but I was able to load them back after the upgrade. Aside from a few 'whinnie the pooh' games that won't play for my 5 year, I'm extemely pleased with the upgrade. Thanks for all the input.
