Every time I start or re-start my computer norton starts disabled and it takes forever for all the programs to load up. I can start another task like Solitaire before all the items are loaded in the little task bar on the lower right. Maybe something like 5 minutes to load every thing.
All of my scans are coming up clean. Ran Spybot, Adware, Norton, Ewido, and the online Panda scans.
This is my Fathers desktop that I am inheriting. This computer has been really slow lately on start up.

Here is my HJT log.

I'm not seeing anything in that log.....Since this is a system you're inheriting, it probably needs a thorough cleaning....Norton is very resource intensive.... A good free AV program, AVG is available. It has a lighter footprint.

Can you post a little about your system specs, please....CPU, HD size/free space, RAM

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link doesn't work) and install it.

*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!

Please configure CleanUp with the following settings:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
[X]Scan local drives for temporary files (Please uncheck this option)
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program. Reboot/logoff when prompted.

Next, Download Trend Micro™ Anti-Spyware for the Web Utility (by clicking the "Scan and Clean your PC" button).
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click the new icon on your desktop (tmas-web-scan.exe)
  • It will say "Loading TrendMicro definitions".
  • Once the definitions are loaded, the program will appear to close then re-open.
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • After it's done scanning, click "Scan Results"
  • Make sure all items found have a check next to them, then click "Clean Threats Now".
  • Click Exit.
Reboot your computer. In place of the TrendMicro icon will be a text file called "Antispyware.log", please double-click that log and copy the entire contents and paste them here.

Last, Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan - requires Internet Explorer

  1. Click on the Scan your PC button & a 'pop up' window shall appear. * ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Click On 'Scan Now'
  3. Enter your e-mail address & click 'Scan Now' ...begins downloading Panda's ActiveX controls.- 8MB
  4. Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
    * You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
  5. If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report. Click on see report
  6. Then click Save report
  7. Post the contents of the report in your next reply
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

My computer is a Compaq 5322RSH P4 1.7 Ghz, 512mb ram, 60 Gig HD, with a MSI LD128LF graphics card.
On C drive I have 8.73GB used and 43.2 GB Free.
on System_Sav D: I have 2.56GB used and 1.33GB free.

Here is the results from the first Trend Micro scan.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Started Scanning
Internet Cookies
Found 'tribalfusion.com' in 'Internet Explorer Cache'
Programs in Memory
Windows Registry
Found '' in 'Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Ranges\Range1'
Internet URL Shortcuts
Files and Directories
Finished Scanning
Started Backup
Finished Backup
Started Cleaning
Finished Cleaning
---------------------------------------------------------------

The Panda Software scan is still going after 2 hours. Looks like it might be done maybe around 2 or 3 am. It is going so slow I can read each file name before it moves on to the next one. So far I can see one Spyware file found.

CleanUp! did just that, about 1200+ files were removed.

As soon as Panda finishes, I'll post the results. If I can stay up that long. Good thing I don't have to be at work till 10 am.

Man, that was worst than watching water boil. Finally finished. Here are the results for the Panda Software Scan of MY COMPUTER.

------------------------------------------------------

Incident Status Location

Spyware:spyware/bargainbuddy No disinfected Windows Registry
------------------------------------------------------

I started the same scan on a 900Mhz ME machine with 192MB RAM and it finished this scan in under a hour. Gives you a idea of how slow this machine is.

Well, from what I can see, malware is not the issue with this system. You have plenty of resources, and the findings were minimal...orphaned registry entries.

You have some unnecessary Startup items, but I don't think that would be enough to slow down the system you've described.

You may want to post a new thread in our WindowsXP forum. Let them know the Security section found nothing.

Once you've gotten that straightened out.....take advantage of the following info:

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

If you do not have a firewall, here are 3 free ones available for personal use:

In light of your recent troubles, I'm sure you'll like to avoid any future infections. Please take a look at these well written articles
