I had a problem with some of my other drives losing everything. I have a SiS IDE system so I thought it might be the SiS driver. But if you don't use their driver everything runs in PIO mode 4 which is almost unusable.
I would run chkdsk when these things happened but what finally happened is that I needed to run chkdsk on the main XP drive. Then chkdsk failed with an unspecified error. When I would reboot it would blue screen.
So I went into the XP recovery console and ran that chkdsk and that seemed to work. But then it would come up into a login/logoff loop. So I decided to try the XP repair (2'nd option). That froze the machine after a long time at Installing Network.
After I rebooted I went back to the XP recovery console to run chkdsk but it saw no C:\WINDOWS and the MAP command did not show the drive!
Has anyone seen anything like this before? I have a lot of valuable personal data there. What can I do to recover XP?
