hey everyone I could really use somehelp here.

I have a friend of mines computer. He running XP not sure if Home or Pro. The other day he was printing and the computer froze up, he then went and unplugged it and when he then went to to restart it it gets to the WIndows XP screen then reboots.

I have tried booting it in safe mode, safe mode with command, last known working config and it gets to the Windows XP screen and then reboots.

Any suggestions?

I've actually seen this happen because of overheating, do you believe this might be the case?

If so, use an extra fan and put it facing your computer, then reboot.

XP wasn't shutdown properly, there are probably errors in the file system.

Boot on a retail XP CD (borrow one if you don't have one), press 'R' at the first screen to access the recovery console and at the c:\windows\ prompt type chkdsk c: /R (the scan can take a long time).

If you still have issues please provide the complete system specs (the link in my sig will tell you what we need to know).

If this is a desktop open the computer case and make sure all fans are spinning (CPU, video card, power supply) and not clogged by dust. Enter the BIOS at startup (look for some "press xx to enter setup" message, it's the del key usually), locate the hardware monitor screen and report your temps, fan speeds and voltages.

@ Undocked Windy : IMO it's better to ask for the temp readings in the BIOS before jumping to the conclusion that the system is overheating :wink:

I didn't know you could check temperatures in the BIOS - I can't. Then again, I have a laptop - I'm it works differently.

Most of the time you can check them in the BIOS, the screen is usually called "hardware monitor" or "pc health status". Some cheap brands (Acer laptops come to my mind) have a very limited BIOS with barely one or two screens worth of options and no hardware monitor screen. Check it out on one of your friend's computers.

Well I think I found the issue. After looking around the computer I went an got some compressed air and started cleaning the fans has two on side and one on the power supply. When I was blowing the air into the power supply the computer booted up, so I took a good look and the fan in the power supply is not working. Looks like I need to change the case.
