This pc is running xp pro and connected directly to a dsl router. I have two icons in the taskbar - one is 'local area connection' as normal. However the second is labeled 'internet connection'. When i double click on it - the click on properties, "This connection allows you to connect to the internet through a shared connection on another computer".
There is one other in the building connecting to the internet - but theres not meant to be any inter-pc networking going on.

In the meantime - since noticing the above - if i click on 'internet connection', it will not display as it used to do before.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Your not talking about the wireless internet connection, are you? Is it a laptop or a desktop?
No not talking about wireless internet connection - thats another days work! (the taskbar icon dissappeared a couple of months ago - and can't get it to display all wireless networks anymore).

This is a desktop.

Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > tell me exactly what you see listed there.

Then, on the left panel of Network Connections, click on My Network Places, I want to know what's listed there as well.

Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > tell me exactly what you see listed there.
Network Setup Wizzard
New Connection Wizzard
Local Area Connection (has the node icon beside it)
Internet Connection (this has icon showing monitor with globe behind it)

Then, on the left panel of Network Connections, click on My Network Places, I want to know what's listed there as well.
Add Network Place
Network Setup Wizzard
Wireless Network Setup Wizzard
Entire Network

I believe that "Internet Connection" is for sharing internet connection. If you're not sharing anything, then just right click on it and click on Disable.
If I right click, theres no 'disable' option but theres an option to 'disconnect'. However, I don't believe that it disconnects when i press this as it still shows up as a connected icon in the taskbar.
As mentioned previously, when I double click on the connection, it won't display - whereas it would a couple of weeks ago.

is it possible to right click on it and click on delete.
If I right click the 'delete' option is greyed out. If I highlight the connection and then press the delete key I get this:

'You cannot delete a connection why it is busy connecting. Please disconnect or close the login page and try again.'

If I unplug the ethernet cable, I still get the same message above.

You stated earlier that MSN Messenger was listed in there. Is MSN Messenger currently open? If so, exit messenger and then try deleting again
Thanks for your help so far tosh9i.

I just checked and msn is not listed under 'Advanced Settings/Services' today. I tried deleting again but i'm getting the same message as before.

Don't quite understand how this is working, but if I switch the router off/on twice with the space of a couple of minutes, it dissappears. After just once, its still trying to reconnect and won't let me delete it for that reason. I don't have to try to attempt to delete it after doing the above twice as it simply is not there anymore.

This was the case yesterday - but when I powered on my computer this morning, it was there again and I had to go through the same process again.

How can this be explained away?

hello ,

just a suggestion

have tried useing the cmd to flush your ipconfig ? do know these steps ?

also have you tried reinstalling your ( TCP/IP

it is sounding like your are having your connection hijacked , it is rare these days and normally happens with dialup but it still dose happen !! you may have gone someplace and downloaded /installed something that the hacker designed for him to use your connection ( like a rootkit /trojan or something )

you may also need to do some serious scans to find it

also try a (sfc) system file checker , all type of crazy things can happen when the core file get corrupted

as they say no system is totally secure
