I wished to upgrade my ram from 2 to 3 gig. I currently have 4 512 ram. When I remove 2 512's and add 2 1gig my computer only reads 2.5 gig when it should read 3 gig. I have made sure all ram chips are good. I have moved them around. I added them one at a time to confirm that each was read. When I install the last one it stays at 2.5. I have an Asus Motherboard. I have also confirmed that I have the right speed ram. I am running xp.

My motherboard is an Asus A8N SLI SE
The ram purchased is 2 Ultra 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400MHZ
In my Bios it says 3072 MB installed 2560 Usable.
So it knows it is there it just will not use it all.
Any suggestions?

Most likely a conflict between the 512 sticks and the 1GB sticks.

Any 32 bit os has a mathematical limit of 4Gig of address space, 64bit is a theoretical limit of 112 gig.
XP 32 bit will usually only use about 2.4 gig tops. We had a tech who tested this by opening and running somewhere around 71 programs while encoding a video on a Q8200 he did get to about 2.8 gig in use before running out of CPU.
