XP Home Woes

863 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  keymaker
An employee brought in his home computer today, a retarded compaq. He said he took it to best buy and they said it needed a new HD (i dont trust BB). Anyway, here's the problem.

The computer tries to boot, it loads up the XP home screen goes blank (HD light still flashin) then reboots before before the login screen. I've so far ran a chkdsk /p at the recovery console and double checked everything in the bios. Any ideas?

Same problem sitting on my bench. We will do a repair installation if doesnt work we wil do a fresh install. Why dont you go to the HD's manufacturers website and get the diagnostic tool and run it. Make sure HD is ok. And for BB GS they always say HD is bad when they dont know whats wrong. Heard that many times. They wont be out there for too long.
Here's one of my experiences with that error.

If you have the data backed up or don't care, wipe it and clean install is the quickest fix. It could be a bad HD, but more than likely simply extremely corrupted. I had SMART errors telling me the drive was dust, but after clean install, HD was fine and computer is still running good as far as I know. Smart errors are not always right. Ironically, same make. They must use really top-notch drives in those...
also try repairing the master boot record and see if that helps. boot up with the windows xp cd again. then instead of typing out "chkdsk /r," this time type out "fixboot" or "fixmbr".

this will fix the master boot record and it should only take a sec for the process to finish. then reboot the computer and try booting into windows again. also try replacing the hdd cable and see if that helps out.
