I always like to zero the drive when doing a clean install, but that's just my little idiosyncrasy.

As a starting point, I would look at the possibility of a driver conflict, or malware. Have you checked Device Manager for any yellow alerts?

Run some scans, such as Trend Micro House Call, Ewido, etc.

If you need some specialist advice, read this and post a HJT if you need to:-

Does this freezing happen with a particular program - World of Warcraft, or something similar?

Occasional freezing can be hard to pin down.

Personally, I would draw up a check list of things to eliminate:-

Malware - as above
Driver Conflict - Device Manager and backtrack on history of new additions/ updates.
Over heating - check BIOS
Voltage stability - Power Supply - check in BIOS
RAM issues - memtest and single RAM module testing.

It might be worth checking that you have the latest drivers for your modem:-

... and the mainboard.

I wonder if the modem drivers are getting into conflict with something else on the system - I see there is mention of a patch for windows, but not specifically for the problem you are experiencing.

Have you followed up the Event viewer ID report with Microsoft support?

It would be interesting to see if you get the same report in Event viewer every time your system freezes.

Can you recall installing any new programs just prior to this problem starting?
