I have a Toshiba Satellite with XP Home.

I let the kids use it. And now it has been pretty much hosed by viruses and trojans and spyware. Not how they managed to shutdown the antivirus.

Could not get Mcafee working again so I uninstalled it. Tried to install a trial version of Kaspersky, but no go.

Finally I resized the disk partition to free up some space and then installed XP Pro in a new partition. Installed Kaspersky under XP Pro and scanned and cleaned the XP Home partition.

Seems to have worked fine except now no programs can be started after booting XP Home. Everything brings up the prompt to select which application to use to open the file, even though the file itself is a program.

Never seen anything like this before.

To me this sounds like your registry's gone crazy! Unless you suspect this PC has a virus? If you want to re-instate your registry then you will need your original windows CD and have a look at this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545. Ignore the first bit it will re-install your registry anyway.
