I have an Acer travelmate 4220 laptop which won't make it all the way through booting up. The windows screen comes up then it checks the hd for problems then it loads as far as the desktop background but no icons appear and it will not respond to any keyboard commands. I've tried 'last known good config', alt +F10 etc and it won't even boot in safe mode. I'm hoping there is a command I can press on startup to restore factory settings from the secret partition to save me having to track down an xp cd to reformat? Any advice and ideas would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Bryan.

I know that you said it won't respond to any keyboard commands but to double check have you tried ctrl alt del? Also does the mouse pointer come up and if so can you move it?

For Alt+F10 to work, D2D must be enabled in the BIOS.
Once enabled and Alt+F10 still does not work then your PQSERVICE (Recovery) partition might be damaged or missing. This could be if
1. Your hard drive is damaged
2. You have deleted files off the recovery partition
3. You have installed a new hard drive in the laptop

Else you could boot from your Acer recovery discs that you made(?) and set everything to default

I was given the computer recently and have no recovery disks. D2D is enabled in the BIOS and alt+F10 still doesn't work so it looks like the recovery hd is damaged and I'll have to find an XP cd. Nevermind. Thanks for your help guys.
