You can try and regenerate the XP ShellIconCache file by deleting this file and rebooting, or if you use Tweakui (XP version) there is an option to rebuild desktop icons, this may help.
XP desktop slow to load
my computer is very fairly fast to load but my desktop icons are slow to load.
