Xp crashes at the startup status bar right in the middle. Would using an xp disc in safe mode to repair xp help at all. If so, would doing that cause any loss of files....I don't want a reformat or anything like that, just looking to see if I would be able to repair maybe a corrupt boot up file? Thanks

that fixed the status bar crash one time

as my last possible choice in repairing windows......run it in safe mode correct and what will it exactly do? No loss in any files....just can't screw it up because it's my parents computer :sigh:

to run a repair you boot from the windows disk and choose install
ignore the first repair option and continue with install
when windows finds the previous installation and offers to do the repair
then do the repair

you have everything you need in post 7 for how it works and how to do it
you need a blank cd
your windows disk
the file you wish to slipstream available on a disk or on the computer
and then it is virtually just mouse clicks

couldn't find the file(s) anywhere so I just did the slipstrem and made a windows xp sp2 disc so I guess we'll see if this works. If not, I'll have to find those files somewhere.
