I have been asked to help fix a problem with a freinds PC which just keeps rebooting - will not start in safe mode either.

It has XP (home?) on it.
Firstly she would like me to recover her "my documents" folder - important stuff in here.

SO I loaded the drive as a secondary hard disk in my XP Pro machine - in order to copy off the files before attempting repair.

Machine kept rebooting until I took option to disable auto restart on terminal error.
Then I got the following Blue screen (I have skipped the usual info part).
STOP: 0x00000024 (oxoo1902FE, oxF796180c, oxF7961508,oxBAC981FC)

*** NTFS.SYS - Address BAC981FC Base at BAC3B000 Datestamp 41107eea

1st Can the data be recovered, if so what method?
Then can OS system be repaired

Thanks

Helpful but not fixed

Thanks - using the Knoppix I managed to get her important data from the hard disk.

Windows did CHKDSK upon restart - but is still not working.
Sometimes I can get in to safe mode - command prompt
and schedule another CHKDSK - other times I cannot get in

Usually the startup seems to hang on windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys

By the way Knoppix will not load on this machine - I had to use another machine after transferring the hard disk - could there be another fault masking the problem (Memory?)

I tried various switches with Knoppix DMA FAILSAFE NOSWAP
often there were swap errors - they did not appear when I used the noswap switch but still KNOPPIX would not load

Thank you
