Hi Everyone. I have decided that enough is enough and I need some help on solving this one. I work in a company and one of my users has come to me with a problem. Their machine was refusing to boot normally and would each time come up wanting to boot into safe mode (machine is an Advent 7040).

Attempted to boot using BartPE however I get a 0x0000007B error (also get this with the XP CD). Resulted to booting into safe mode and ran chkdsk, sure enough it found problems. Ran chkdsk /R and rebooted the machine. Check disk ran through fine and came up saying it was complete however did nothing just sat there. Left it for a while...nothing. Forced a reboot and it rebooted into safe mode... here comes problem 2

Laptop now doesn't boot into safemode hangs at agpCPQ.sys so I can no longer boot at all. Any ideas on what could be causing the problems?

G'Day lvcjw,

I have been researching your problem, and I'm afraid to say that its not good news. :4-thatsba
There are two things to do here...

Firstly, have a look at this troubleshooting article from Microsoft®.

Secondly, once you get the cantankerous machine to boot, I'd suggest that you go to the link "The 5 Steps" in my signature, and read the instructions thoroughly.

Good luck with it, and please post back with the results.

Thanks for the reply Chauffeur2 I will have a look at the link once I get the HDD back into the laptop. I am now presuming that it must be a driver issue due to the fact that it booted in my pc and into windows without any hastle! I will let you know the progress after I have looked at the link.

Once again thanks for the advice!

Right..

Laptop is now booting fine and working as it should (apart from safe mode). The problem seemed to be an old network card that was in the PCMCIA slot. Removed the card, booted up laptop and it was fine. I have since added the card back in (despite user not needing it) and it still boots fine.

Any ideas where I can find a bios update to solve the safe mode problem? Can't really find much help on Advent laptops (this is a 7040)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with that link!
