Try running a laser lens cleaning disc through the system. Do you keep your machine near the floor or any other dusty area?

i had this problem in the first couple of months i had my xbox. i went out and bought a lens cleaner this also didnt work so i took it to a specialist and it turned out a wire connected to the lens had come loose. it is now fixed and has been working fine for the last two years :normal:
Also had the same problem. Turned out the laser was faulty and had it replaced under warranty. Been working fine for 12 months now.
Yeah, try a lens cleaner. If that doesnt work, you could replace the drive (look on ebay or something). Its not hard, but it will break your warranty if you have one. if you have an xbox that is one of the earlier versions, it might have a defective thompson drive. anyways, just my $.02

Well I had a bad experience too, my game will freeze as soon as I put a CD in my Xbox console. So I went to the electronic store to buy a DVD lens cleaner . As soon as I put the lens cleaner in my Xbox console, I had this mesage on the screen. "U need to connect the DVD Playback Kit receiver to a controller port to watch movies. Remove the disc to continue" :4-dontkno

I'm confused, please help....
To play DVD videos, the XBox needs a DVD Playback kit. It's just a receiver you plug into one of the controller ports, and a remote control.

Unfortunately, the lens cleaner you got (as you said it was specifically a DVD lens cleaner) is actually a video DVD with a cleaning head instead of the more standard CD-cleaners (which are just audio CD's with a brush attached to them).

You have three options here:

  1. Get a DVD Playback Kit for your XBox (they retail at £20 here in the UK I believe, not sure about elsewhere)
  2. Borrow someone else's receiver for running the DVD lens cleaner
  3. Go out and buy a regular CD lens cleaner

As far as I know, there is no diferrence between a DVD lens cleaner and a CD lens cleaner except the DVD one can't be used in a CD drive (or in your case an XBox without a playback kit) so I think it's just a manufacturer's ploy to make you spend extra on either upgrading to a DVD lens cleaner, or paying extra for a DVD version instead of a CD one.
Thanks dude. I tried the 3rd option:

3. Go out and buy a regular CD lens cleaner. I tried to exchange the DVD lens cleaner I bought for the CD lens cleaner. So I called back the store, told them that I made a mistake, that I should have bought the CD lens cleaner instead. The store asked me if the DVD package was opened, I told them yes. Big mistake. They will not take it back! So I'm stuck with my DVD lens cleaner.

Now the only option for me is the 1st option:

1. Get a DVD Playback Kit for my XBox
