i go to www.washingtonpost.com, click on a story, finish with it, click the BACK ARROW in upper left hand corner, and.....NOTHING HAPPENS. I move to the right a bit and click the little DOWN ARROW and see rows of www.facebook.com/plugins/activi or /like.ph or .... I must go down past several of these facebook/plugins till I get to www.washingtonpost.com to return to Washington Post's site. Doing this for each article over the past several months is an enormous time-waster. I don't know where the facebook stuff comes from. I search my PC for facebook and nothing comes up. Until recently this was the only site that had the problem, but now there are a few more. How can I get rid of the encroachment? Thanks

If you're worried about losing your favorites, make a backup before doing anything else.

Hit the alt key to bring up the menu bar at the top of the screen, then go to File > Import/Export > 'Export to a file', select Favorites, make a note of where the backup file is going to be saved, then click the Export button.

You can then copy the backup html file to a USB stick for extra security.

koala and Power,
I reset IE9 as suggested but still have the same problem. After viewing an article from www.washingtonpost.com, I move the mouse pointer over the Back button to return to the previous washingtonpost page and see the www.facebook.com/plugins/.... So when I click the Back button nothing happens.

To return to the previous washingtonpost page, I must continue clicking till I exhaust the accumulated facebookplugins. This is where I miss the little drop-down button of IE8 which showed the history of the Backs. Then I could see a list of each of the facebookplugins, skip over them and click directly on last washingtonpost page, using only one extra click instead of 5 of 6 Backclicks that I must use now.

BTW, I did not lose the Favorties.

Thanks for trying to help.

IE9 doesn't have the little drop-down button that IE8 had. Microsoft has removed this to streamline the appearance of the browser (or make it less intuitive to use, depending on your point of view).

Instead, you just need to right-click the Back button. This will popup a list of all previous pages, then you can select the one you want to return to.

If you haven't done so already, you should make a backup of your favorites and save it on a USB stick. It's always good to have a backup of important items. Computers crash and hard drives die, by which time it's too late to recover data.

  • Click Here to download ToolbarCop. Save it to your desktop.
  • Go to your desktop and extract toolbarcop.zip.
  • Go to the extracted files
  • Double click on Toolbarcop.exe
  • Click on the notepad symbol:
  • A notepad file should pop up, please copy and paste Everything from the notepad file and paste it back into this thread.

Power,
I think this is what you wanted. Also, besides
the facebook nuisance, a couple of weeks ago I started getting some twitter nuisances, also preventing me from going back to a previous page.

koala,
I saved the favorites, and will move it to my USB stick. Also, thanks for the right-click of the Back button tip. Is information like your tip from the shortcuts help page? I must learn more about the details of IE9.

No, just trial and error. Right-clicking gives options in most programs, so it seemed logical that it would do something in IE9.

Open IE like this:

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools and click on Internet Explore (No Addons)

Does the same thing happen.

There are alot of tool bars installed in IE, what ones do you use?

I did your suggestion and got a message "Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons". I went to washingtonopost.com, clicked on an article, back-clicked, and got the same www.facebook.com/plugin...

The only toolbar I normally have turned on is the Favorites Toolbar. Incidentally, the CelticMusicRadio Toolbar and Conduit Engine Toolbar shown above from Toolbarcop, I downloaded just a few days ago and have since uninstalled them.

I did your suggestion and still have the problem. Back on 15 February, I contacted Washington Post about the problem and they said to clear cache and cookies. I did that with no change in the problem. I replied the negative results, but received no further reply from them.

www.washingtonpost.com is the only site giving the problem. I thought that another site also had the problem, but it occurs only when I click on an article to read and it redirects me to www.washingtonpost.com.

until you can solve the issue, just right click on the article you want to read and open in new tab. when finished just close the tab.
