Hi guys, Iam not sure where to post this question.

With regarding to wireless networking. I currently use a WAP2 key.

I was told that by having security on the network does slow down my connection (only a little bit).

Can I only use MAC Address filtering, so that only the MAC addresses that I register work on my network. But at the same time I remove all the WAP Key.

I was told that having no security (WPA,WEP), My network would run faster, (signal).

Is this true??

Does this also mean that no one else would would be able to access my network (strangers)??

mac addressing and registering is a way to keep unknown computers (clients) off your network.
wpa and wep provide encryption which prevents strangers from 'eavesdropping' on your wireless connection.
the two are not mutually dependent, and do not provide the same functions.
both have attack vectors, so you can use both at the same time to protect your wireless network.
take a look at this article (Wireless security - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) for some tips and more information

Yeah if someone really wanted on your network they could use some type of software to make it look like your MAC address with a packet sniffer or something like that. So MAC filtering is pretty strong against people who give up easily but if you have a really savoy neighbor who really wants on he can get on. Best wet would be to use WPA2 because it is the most secure and then enable MAC filtering if you wanted that extra little boost of security. But then every time you want to connect a new device you would have to go through the hassle of putting the MAC address in to allow it so it might not be worth the hassle to you. Also you could hide you network's name so they would need to know the name of the network to get on it also. If you really wanted to go all out lol.
