I am getting rediculously high temps with my prescott (Higher than 80*C) and I am wonderng if this would make a good heatsink. I have an oddly shapped matx case and I dont have more than 70mm height to fit a heatsink and I am wondering if this one would make a good passive heatsink for a heavy gamer.

Cooling a Prescott passively for heavy gaming I would imagine is near impossible, even using the best heatpipe solutions available today. The heatsink you linked does look interesting tho, as it is all copper. You would need some airflow on that and it might get it to work, but passively just won't happen IMHO. The HS is only 26mm high, so you could probably attach some sort of fan above it. Maybe find a narrow(15mm) 92mm fan and you would have about 25mm left over for entering air to flow..not much room. A full size(25mm) fan just wouldn't allow enough room for airflow between the case and fan entrance. Maybe you could cut a hole and add a grill thru the case above the HSF and duct it for a cool mod  .

If you try it, let us know how it goes :sayyes:

Its not the side of the case that will not permit more than 70mm of room, it is a metal bar running along the case for suppport. I air duct mod would be neat but there is simply not enough room. The heatsink if you look closely does not have a mount for a fan so I assume it is supposed to run passive. With some artic silver five I may get it to work.

I would definitely find a way to put some airflow through the ribs of that heatsink. Even if you had to blow through the ribs from the side it would be much better than nothing at all.

You could mod the metal bar by cutting a section out and rejoining it with a metal ring or even a horse shoe shaped joiner.

Hi,

I could just not recommend a passive heatsink for what you have and what you want to do with it. I feel that a passive unit will not be able to keep the temps down to an acceptable temperature.
