Hilly ho!!! Wellsir ... I bought myself the exact same router Cisco Linksys EA 2700. I plug it in, but no internet connection. I try to install it with the disk and I can't get pass the password phase stating it is incorrect and I know it is either password or admin. I even tried my wifi password and it didn't work. What is going on? Why would the exact same router not plug and play?

I am connecting the router to my computer. My ISP is the local telephone company. I didn't think I needed the disk. I just don't understand why the same router hooked up to the same computer would be a plug and play. Why won't it work? Thanks for the link.

If it is connected to a DSL Modem, you probably have to set the router to log you into the ISP with a username and password . . the ISP can tell you how they work

Nope ... not a DSL modem ... it's a cable modem. I just don't understand why it won't work by just plugging it in. I mean everything is the same.:4-dontkno

I'd restart the cable modem by unplugging the power and then plugging it back in. Once it's back online, then plug your router in to the modem and reboot the router. If that doesn't work, simply call your ISP and they should be able to provide more assistance than random people on a technical forum that don't know your specific situation.

Most phone company is dsl . .

If you plug the pc directly into the modem, do you have internet?
Wellsir ... I do indeed have internet when plugged directly into the modem and I have internet with the router that is the same as the one I bought. Both are the Cisco Linksys EA2700. I don't have internet with the one I bought.

Yes ... I did do all that ... I unplugged the modem and the router ... rebooted the computer ... plugged the modem... waited for it to come on fully ... then the router ... no internet ... but shouldn't the exact same router be plug and play ... and if not ... why not? I don't understand that. :nonono:

What you're missing is that the IP that's handed out to the device plugged in to the Cable Modem is based on the MAC address of the device. So if I have two identical model routers, their MAC addresses will be different due to the fact that EVERY network device has a unique MAC address. That being said, if I had router 1 plugged in and can get to the internet and then I simply swapped router 2 for router 1, router 2 typically wouldn't get a valid IP address since the modem has already assigned it's public IP to Router 1. Normally a quick reboot of the cable modem and router gets things back online. If you're NOT getting back online after rebooting the cable modem and router, then you should log in to the router and see if there are any error messages or if it's actually getting an IP address from the cable modem.

Well that certainly makes sense, but question ... how can you log into the router without internet access?:ermm: Or do I go in with the router that connect and see if there is an error that way?

With the computer attached to the router, go to Start/Search and type CMD, right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator.
In the Elevated Command Prompt type ipconfig /all and press enter. In the IP log, the Default Gateway is the IP address of your router (eg) 192.168.1.254.
Open a browser and type the ip address into it to log into the router. follow this Setup guide: How to Login to the Cisco Linksys-EA2700

no router is plug and play. you have to configure it which requires you logging in via the lan. once logged in you may need to clone your workstations mac address to the routers wan interface. There is usually a choice on the wan setup page to address this requirement.

None of the passwords cisco has will allow me to access the router so I can get internet access. I tried admin ... password ... blank ... none ... highspeed ... cusadmin ... unknown ... cisco ... I can't gain access to the page. I keep getting a invalid password error.:banghead::facepalm::ermm:

Well alrighty then:flowers: I got it together ... I had to use the software disc that came with the unit in order to connect to the internet. Someone posted I didn't need to do that, but you do.:ermm: So I will mark this as problems solved. Thanks to all those that posted. :thumb:
