first of all, i had absoulutely NO idea what to title this thread, that is the best i could do, my problem is i recently bought some memory for my computer on ebay, (ebay not the problem) i own an emachine t5048a, yeah, i know what your thinking, an emachine, but i got a sweet christmas time deal on the whole package, ANYWAYS, pretty much every website on the internet says this computer takes 184 pin memory, so i bought some, i found out the hard way this computer really takes 240 pin, that sucked, on to the problem, the computer came with 512mb of ram, when you right click "my comptuer" the click "properties" it says only 448mb, thats fine, so i lose 64mb somewhere, anyways, i got in the mail today my new memory, finally, a 1gb stick, pc4200, 240 pin, what else is weird is every website said this computer takes pc3200 memory, the stick thats already in there is clearly labeled pc4200, conveinently enough, my new memory is also pc4200, now keep in mind my computer only has 2 memory slots, with a maximum capacity of 2gb, now on to the problem, i installed the new memory, booted the computer up, right clicked my comptuer to see how much ram i have now, i was expecting around 1.5 gb, i only have 896mb now, so i shut the computer off, take out the old memory, the stick that came with it, so now theres only the 1gb stick i just bought, i turn on the computer (now with 512 less mb) right click my computer, it still shows 896mb, with the new memory in, its acting like the old stick isnt even there, do you know why? and how to fix this??

Try putting the larger, 1GB stick in the first slot. Sometimes motherboards have slot dependencies.

Also, just so you have the information, you 'lose' that 64MB of RAM because the system is using it for displaying your video. :)

Hope this helps,
Cheers!
Also, try clearing the cmos after the stick is installed.
i tried switching both sticks in both slots already, that changed nothing, how do i clear the cmos??
with the help of google.com, i figured out how to clear the cmos, still, no change, anyone else have any ideas??
did you fix the problem? because i have the same computer and just ordered a 1GB stick, hopefully i dont have the same prob.
no i didnt, im still stuck with only the 1gb stick working, ive just come to the conclusion that the computer is a stubborn pile of ****, and ive pretty much given up all hope with it, do you have the t5048, or the t5048a?? what kind of memory did you buy? how many pins???
i have a t5048A, i bought a Corsair Memory, Inc.
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 533 (PC2 4200). located here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145525

on the box it says a t5048, in the system in says t5048A.
yeah, i learned that the t5048 is DDR, 184 pin, the t5048a has ddr2 memory, 240 pin,

so did you already purchase and install it?? did everything work fine?? if not will you let me know when you get it installed?? im just curious.... this problem still has me royally pissed off cuz now i have 512mb of this perfectly good memory i cant use
yeah, thats what i was figuring, that the t5048 is the one with the ddr 184pin. anyways, no i didnt receive it yet, im expecting it tomorrow. btw what brand was your memory?
received it today. installed it, and its working GREAT! except one thing, in windows it says i have 1.37GB, i have a 1GB, and a 512MB chip installed, i dont know though, its probably being used by something...
I also have T5048A. Don't forget thet the onboard Video eats up 128M.

I have a T5048 and have the exact same issue. DId you ever find out why it's not seeing the additional 512MB of RAM? Thanks.
If you want to run two sticks of ram they have to be the same size , I ran into the same problem when installing memory recently. So if you want 1 gb you do 2X 512 MB which runs faster than 1x 1GB if you want 2 gb you do 2X 1 GB I tried to do 1x 1gb and 1x 512mb and my computer wouldn't even boot.
Hope this helps
the computer should run with the different size mg
are you sure they have not given you a 512mg stick instead of the 1g
