Wireless Connection to Internet Problems

1457 Views 13 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  UK014907
Hi, I hope you can help me.

I recently had a Broadband package installed for me. This contains a SKY router, otherwise known as a Netgear684, and a Belkin wireless adapter that plugs into the computer USB port.

It had been working OK, but now, after a virus or malware infection, it seems to have gone haywire. I have now cleaned the computer but now when I open up, a connection is showing as available (Network Connection 3). When I access the Internet I get my home page as not being available. I also get a message in the system tray area stating that the coonection has been made but is unsecured.

I keep trying without luck. On some occasions I issue a repair command and it goes through disabling the wireless adapter, re-enabling and acquiring an IP address. When finished, it still states that the connection has been made and that it is unsecured. I connect only to receive the same message as before (page not displayed).

Eventually, the monitor symbol in the system tray is crossed out (a red cross) and I am then able to connect, without any messages.

I have looked at the Internet Tools folder under Connections and here it states Broadband.

In Network Connections the Broaband entry has Diconnected against it.

What else can I tell or give you to be able to determine what actions I should take.

I have issued Subscribe to this thread so I await news from you.

First off, what version/patch level of Windows do you use? I see W98 in your profile, is that W98 or W98SE?

Start, Run, COMMAND to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

First off, can you connect if you use a cable to the router?

Let's try this.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Clarification

John, can you just clarify the point about a cable connection.

I cannot connect by cable as the router is in a totally different part of the house. Do i still perform the command you mention, when I connect via wireless? This can take some time as first time never works and it is hit & miss whether I can get a connection. I am at work at the moment so i will look for your reply this evening when I am at home.

The one thing that I am sure about is the balloon that keeps appearing telling me that the connection has been made. This has only just started appearing at the same time as the connection problems.

Steve
Yes, the stack repair applies to wired or wireless connections.
Response

Johm> i completed your command and rebooted. No difference. The first command came back with some messages but the second one gave no response.

What next?
Additional Comment

John, I also finding it more difficult to access the internet. I get another message telling me that there is limited connectivity or no connectivity.

Help
Another comment

When I do a view wireless network list, I see another connection that I have never heard of.
Other connections are normal, that's a neighbor with a wireless network.

Do you have encryption enabled on your network? If so, can you connect if you disable it for a test? I'm guessing you may be connecting to the other network, but it's too weak to sustain a connection.
John, up until now I have been connecting to my own network. I do check at start up that I am connecting to the correct router.

If you wish me to perform the test I will, but you would need to tell me how to disable encryption bearing in mind the router and the network adapter (Netgear DG834GT).

Latest Info

Got home last night and the system was working beautifully. No changes made. What is going on?
Obviously, your router knew I was on the job and decided to work. Just enjoy it.
Closure

Thanks John. If you haven't already done so, you can close this thread.

Thanks for your help.
