There was a similar post to this in Frebruary of 2008 but the solution didn't work for me or the original poster.

I have 3 computers all with WXPProSP3. I want to network them around the house. My older Desktop can't see the newer computers (My Network Places\Entire Network\MyName\...)

The other newer 2 computers can see the desktop but the user (me) lacks permission to connect to the desktop. See the error message at the end of this message.

The newer computers can see each other and share, copy, modify files, like a network is supposed to work.

I'm surmising there is something amiss in the Desktop machine, as I have a lot of software install/uninstalls, etc on it. I have probably messed something up. All the computers are in the same workgroup ingeniously named "WORKGROUP."

I have file sharing turned on in all 3 computers under Windows Firewall.

The error message when trying to connect is:
\\Mainframe is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contract the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The network path was not found.

Thank you.
Oldmartian
