WinXP mode w/ Internet?

I was wondering if there were any modes other than normal mode (such as hibernation) that the host computer could be on, while a computer using the host's Internet connection could still access the Internet. It's just a little question I had, and I'd be happy to clear it up if it's still confusing to people. Thanks for any help!
