\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM missing or corrupt

I am running a Gateway with XP Home. This computer was given to me and had Norton's secutity expired so I remomed it for more disk space. Now I can't open windows because I get registry error: Windows could not start because the following is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

I have tried the OS installation disk and get the following after Windows setup: Shut down Windows to prevent damage to computer.

Clicked (r) to go to the recovery console: my only option was, 1: C:\WINNT, so tried that and get: problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. Registry _Error***Stop: 0x00000051 (0x00000001,0xE1195468,0x0076B000,0x000001D5)

What now? Thanks

you know the old adage if it aint broke dont fix it....

now is this the original restore disk that came with the gateway and has it ever worked before to load xp or repair xp???
Ya I here ya there louge1953, and yes it's the original gateway OS XP home disk.
okay so whats the model number of the gateway ,,? is it a desktop or laptop? seems you may have a failing harddrive or something else going bad.. or even possibly a bad restore disk....or bad CD rom have you tried another CD or DVD rom
I don't think it's hardrive or else going bad as it boots to the cd and goes through windows setup but I get the registry error and shuts down windows.
Anyway: Model gateway (GM) MFATXSTL KTH 300SE DESKTOP
open up the case and see if there are two sticks of ram installed ...if so ,,,remove one then try reloading windows and see if the load finishes. if no joy,,,reinstall that stick of ram and remove the other stick of ram and retry loading windows....trying to see if it is a bad stick of ram causing it to stop loading..
It's only got one stick, but like you said, "if it ain't broke don't fix it" so I guess I'll wait to see if I get other opinions before going under the hood...:)
