So I'm installing windows XP on a brand new Maxtor 120GB harddrive with an 8mb cache.
However, the problem is that when I boot up off the CD, it goes through all the usual procedures till it gets to formatting the harddrive. If I select quick format under the NTFS type, it'll jump to 20%, then 100%, then say that there's a problem with the harddrive. So then I try to format under the normal NTFS. However, it'll start off at zero, and stay there. For a very very long time. And it never advanced past 0. The bios is recognizing the harddrive and I hear it clicking and all but it just doesn't seem to format correctly. Will formatting with a win 98 boot CD help at all?

Run the Maxblast progam that came with the drive and do some of the tests and see what that comes up with.

Maxblast works great...

did you partition first? You can't format a non partitioned drive.

If you want to use FAT32 on 120gb partition you need to FDISK ...
