most common mistake people do is to upgrade their system to SP2 while it is infected. Malware infection might get severe or change its behaviour after the upgrade and might cause some serious headache. Make sure your system is malware free. If you are going to use the sp2 cd or downloaded file it will not repair your system. If it is an xp cd with sp2 you are fine. If it is a cd or downloaded file i would run sfc /scannow just to be on the safe side. I would also recommend not to have any other windows open when doing the upgrade. Just leave your computer alone untill it finishes the installation. Make sure you get additional updates after the upgrade. Good luck and enjoy
