I run a very tight shift on my computer for the most part. Just plain "Safe" habits. I don't go anywhere terribly dangerous, nor do I download anything suspicous...ect ect.

I'm just wondering, for someone who's not really that exposed to the internet's more, dangerous areas... is there really a point in my downloading security updates and such?

I am running XP Home, Version 2002, SP2.

Also;

Besides for Spybot S&D and Ad Aware, what are some good routine computer hygene programs?

And what's a reliable registry cleaner?

Preferably all free-to-use software.

Any thoughts, suggestions, are much appreciated.

Thanks~

Hi and welcome to TSF.

This article is a good start point. Yes you should download MS Security updates - they patch specific problems and although you may never need them, it's always best to keep up to date. I personally would steer away from a Registry Cleaner - you can do your system more harm than good playing with the Registry - I don't believe there's any real need for one or any advantages to having one.
