Sorry if there is a thread about this already. I did search but couldn't find anything that matched, just some similar problems.

Recently my PC has been freezing very often. It can happen whilst logging in, with the Windows XP splash screen showing.

It can happen when I have the desktop showing before opening any programs.

It can happen when using a browser or any other program.

The screen just freezes. I can still see everything that was open and the cursor, but it is as if it is just a picture of what was on the screen.

Control Alt Delete does nothing, nor do any other key presses or mouse movements. The machine has to be powered of then on again, then after a while it will just does the same again.

I have run AVG anti virus and removed anything it has found.

I have also used AVG anti spyware, Ad-Aware SE, CCshreader - registry cleaner.

I have Zone Alarm firewall but no other.

I wondered if anyone could help me in any way.:4-dontkno

Thanks

Go to START>RUN and type msconfig - click the diagnostic start-up option and restart the machine - if the problem doesn't show when in this mode, I would suspect a driver. Roll back any recent updates.

Has zone-alarm been updated recently? Does this happen if zone-alarm is switched off?

If you still get the problem in diagnostic mode, I would suggest running through the advice here:-

BTW, if you need to post a HJT log - this is not the forum to post on, use the HJT board, which is where the specialist techs operate from.
