Good day, everyone.
I am working on a Dell Latitude D620 Laptop running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 SP3 and 2 GB RAM. I have been able to save the system from being completely unstable by successfully removing all viruses, malware and spyware, etc. The owner is a typical user who does not perform standard maintenance. I have performed all standard maintenance procedures including defragmentation, disk cleanup, *.tmp removal and disk error checks. I also removed all out of date antivirus software and installed Avast! which has had 3, clean scans. Performance is now normal.
My problem is that overtime, the system gradually becomes unresponsive and then unstable. For 3 nights, I have booted up the system and left it in a normal state overnight. In the morning, I would test it by running normal functions. What happens is that the system gradually becomes unresponsive. Best way to describe it is when I right click the desktop to bring up the options menu, it dimly pops up and I must mouse over it to become complete. I can click on an option and it will open up, but then the system begins to become unresponsive. I click on the Start menu and it will pop up, but then it will remain there. Subsequently, the system becomes totally unresponsive to which I can only move the cursor around. I am then forced to restart via the power button. This happened for 3 consecutive nights. So then I decided to try it in Safe Mode with Networking. The system remained stable, never having the freezing issue. Theoretically, this should tell me that it is more of a hardware issue. So I naturally began with the RAM modules, testing each one. They both are of proper functionality. I then tried uninstalling the DVD drive and the issue persisted in Normal Windows mode.
I could use some advice on how to isolate what is causing the issue. Again, it becomes unresponsive only in Normal Windows mode, not Safe Mode with Networking, so it is not a network issue. The last time the system froze, it completely froze up with a long, continuous beep sound.
I would appreciate any insight... much obliged.
