I recently purchased a logiteck Quick cam pro 5000 web cam. Installation went ok until I was asked to connect the cam when I received an on screen message, "The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry. This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later".

I actually run Windows XP with SP2 both fully updated plus newest DirectX.

Logitech support talked me through various processes & checks and eventually concluded that my system was missing 2 essential files. (1) USB.INF (2) WDMA_USB.INF

Can anybody advise on where/if I can download these files?
I do not have a WindowXP master disk as windows was pre installed on purchase.

It is possible that the when I removed my previous cam from the system that it took the files with it as I am not able to re install that cam either.

Thank you.

Hi Nickster, Thanks for the further advice. To show my knowledge of computers - when you sent the files I didn't know that I had to right click & install I thought when I downloaded them they just did their own thing (my excuse: on coming old age and sinility - & I'm sticking to it). Anyway I have done what you said (right clicked etc) and tried re-installing the cam again but still with no success.

Back to the main problem. All the software for the cam has downloaded ok.
When asked to connect the cam, I do so and you can see the cam starting to be installed then I get the following on screen message:
CANNOT INSTALL THIS HARDWARE. There was a problem installing this hardware. USB DEVICE: An error has occurred during the installation of this device. The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry.
This may be because the INF was written for windows 95 or later. Please contact your hardware vendor.

I in fact run Windows XP with SP2 all fully updated plus the most recent DirectX.

As I mentioned previously, I contacted Logitech support and after an hour of checking and trying various things they came to the conclusion that it was the 2 missing files that were causing the problem. I have also contacted Packard Bell support twice in the past week but I have had no answer from them at all other than automated acknowledgements.

One last thing that I discovered when rummageing around. On entering device manager I can find no "imaging devices file". However against USB device there is a yellow exclamation mark and when I enter the properties box it gives, Manufacturer: Logitech, Location: 0 (USB device) and in status it says, "The drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). In details it says: Device instance i/d, USB\VID_046D&PID_08CE\591BA3AB.

I must confess that most of that is double dutch to me but it may be of assistance to you. Sorry for the lengthy diatribe but I have tried to give as much info as possible. Many thanks once again.

Sounds to me like you may have a much older PC (packard Bell) and you installed XP on that PC which previously had win95 (maybe it still does and you just did an upgrade install?) on it and it failed to correctly install the USB drivers. In this case you need to find out exactly what chipset/motherboard the PC is using and you may have to install a win2000 (xp compatible driver) manually. EG; Winxp isn't recognizing your USB ports correctly on your older PC.

Hi Bat21,
Thanks for the message. This comp was purchased new around 2 or 3 years ago from PC World with Windows XP and other software pre installed. It worked fine until a couple of weeks ago when I uninstalled my previous cam (via add/remove programmes) prior to installing the new one. I suspect that the uninstalling of the previous cam took away more than the cam components as I am unable to reinstall it either.
Thanks for your suggestion.

Wow. I'm way off. Ok, when you mentioned Packard bell giving you win 95 driver errors I had visions of the old P3 or P2 days :)

USB drivers should be on your restore CD, 'but' and USB 2.0 and 1.1 should be automatically installed anyway especially with SP2. In the device manager you should be able to reinstall the USB driver from there wherer your yellow checkmark is by right clicking and select "update driver", then you will get a welcome dialog and hardware update wizard, and you would choose no not this time", then on the next box "install software automatically". If that doesn't work you can do the same routine but on the second box 'install from a specific location", then on the next box "don't search I will choose the driver to install", then you should see a few selections there for you to be able to install.

As bat21 suggested, check any restore disks you may have as the drivers may be on there (don't actually boot with the restore disk in place but you should be able to load it with Windows running and then explorer the contents).

Also, did you get any discs with the Logitech cam?

Hi Nickster & Bat 21,
Not getting anywhere fast I'm afraid. Clicking on USB device in device manager is only taking me around in circles. If I choose "install software automatically" and insert the cam set up disk when asked you can see the download starting then up comes the message, "Cannot install this hardware............etc as mentioned above.
When I go to the second box, "install from a specific location" and then, "don't search, I will choose the driver to install" - it only gives me one option and that is the same driver as previously. When I select it and update it starts to update then goes back to the same old message, "cannot install this hardware.................etc.
I have a set up disk which came with the cam but during my conversation with logitech they told me to download the software directly from their site as it is more up to date - I have tried both methods several times (from the site and from the disk) but just end up with the same problem.
I do not have a set up disk for WindowsXP as it was pre-loaded and microsoft is not so helpful in that department (they used to provide back up disks in previous years)
I have tried contacting Microsoft tech support but as soon as they know that Windows was pre-installed they just refer me back to Packard Bell. I have contacted PB's tech supprt (The Tech Guys) twice in about 7 or 8 days but all I get is an automated acknowledgement saying they will respond shortly but they haven't done so yet.
Sorry to be such a pain guys though it does get a bit frustrating after a while.
