My desktop randomly freezes and will not respond to keyboard or mouse inputs. No blue screen or error code is generated when this happens. Originally this occasionally happened shortly after resuming from standby. However, it has progressed to happen randomly anytime the computer is turned on--frequently during or shortly after startup. Also recently the computer has begun randomly rebooting even though set to not automatically restart.

If task manager is open, no unusual CPU usage shows up. No program needs to be running for this problem to occur. Other than this problem, everything on the computer works normally, and I can sometimes use the computer for hours with no problems. Can someone please help me identify what is causing this problem?

My computer is a Dell Dimension 2350 with a 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1 Gb RAM, running Windows XP Home SP3. Antivirus software is MS Security Essentials.

I recently visited the malware side of the forum to see if this could be a virus problem. (http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f50/windows-xp-freezes-with-no-error-message-673657.html#post3955431) After a series of tests, the computer was declared clean--but the problem persists. At their advice, I am reposting here.

Other unsuccessful attempts to correct this problem are listed below:
DISK CHECK: problems found and corrected
System Restore to earlier date: no change
System Hibernate instead of Standby: no change
Disk Defragment: no change
CTRL SCROLL SCROLL: does not work when system is frozen
System Shut-down instead of Standby: no change
Dell Support Center PC Checkup (PC Doctor suite): no problems found with RAM check, CPU check, or drive checks
Disconnect of all hardware except mouse & keyboard: no change
Mouse swap out: no change
memtest86: ok after running overnight
Seatools drive check: ok for both drives
removed 2nd hard drive: no change
replaced PSU with new larger unit: no change

P.S. I didn't see specific instructions for posting XP problems to this forum. If I am supposed to run the same programs listed for Win7/8 and Vista, please advise. Thanks!

I tried the clean boot suggestion, but with no success. Shortly after starting in a clean boot state, the computer froze with no error message.

I have tried all steps on the maintenance link except for removing the less frequently used programs. I will take another look this weekend to see what I can get rid of. Meanwhile, I do have 12.5 GB free out of a 60 GB hard drive.

The TSF_XP_Support files are attached. Any additional recommendations you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Reports point to a hardware problem. Do the following hardware testing:
NOTE:
  • If you are overclocking any hardware, please stop.
  • Run FurMark to test the display card for artifacts and temperature issues.

  • Run Display card memory tests to check the display card for memory problems.

  • Run Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find problems. Make sure to run it once after the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then also run it again when the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

  • Run Prime95 to test your CPU, RAM modules, and general hardware.

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.

If you need help determining what drivers are associated with what devices or software, let us know.

3rd Party Drivers:
The following is for information purposes only. My recommendations were given above. The drivers that follow belong to software or devices that were not developed by Microsoft. Any drivers in red should be updated/replaced/removed. You can find links to the driver information and where to update the drivers in the section after the code box:

Since it is an older computer, you should take the time to check the capacitors on your motherboard. I have seen computer freeze randomly after the capacitor went out. They look like little batteries. If they are swelled up, then that is the problem. The tops of them should be flat with an X like indention on them.
Let me know if they look good or bad. :)
Also, if you have dust cleaner, clean out the computer, the heat sink for the psu, all the fans. It might be getting hot.

This computer has no overclocking.

I downloaded and ran MemTest 86+ overnight, completing 12 passes without errors. I tried to run FurMark, but get the error message: "FurMark requires an OpenGL 2.0 compliant graphics controller. Startup failed."

Neither of the display card memory tests worked. MemtestCL.exe produced the error message: "application failed to start because OpenCL.dll was not found." MemtestG80 will not run, and exits immediately after starting. Could this be related to having integrated Intel 84845G graphics?

I ran Prime95 for 2 hours of the Blend torture test without problems. Unfortunately none of the linked programs actually show CPU or GPU temperatures on my system. (The only temperature visible was the harddrive temperature, which maxed out at 33 deg C.) So I'm hesitant to run many more severe torture tests without confirmation that the test itself isn't causing further damage.

Is there a simple way to identify which devices are associated with the drivers? I'm having trouble figuring out which devices to uninstall/reinstall. (Some of the old drivers may be related to a recent Windows repair installation--run after the freezing problem started. I'll rerun updates to make sure this isn't a source of the old drivers.)

If the drivers don't fix the issue, are there any further recommendations before I try wiping the system clean and starting over?

Have you checked the event log to see what it says? Have you checked the system tools & check for problem devices ?
The event log shows nothing when freezing occurs. Also, no problem devices show up in system tools.

Since it is an older computer, you should take the time to check the capacitors on your motherboard.
In answer to your earlier question, none of the capacitors appeared obviously bulged. I also did clean out the computer earlier with no benefit.

There's one other symptom I think I forgot to mention. For the last 2 years, the computer occasionally needed to try twice to find a boot device (hard drive) during startup--see attached photo. Until about 2 months ago, pressing F2 (to enter setup) and then F10 (to save) with no changes allowed the computer to start up normally. Recently, the computer's startup trouble has increased to the point where 5-6 startup tries may be necessary.

Does the fact that the computer "cannot find the hard drive" definitely indicate that the freezing is a hardware problem? If so, is there a quick test that can identify which hardware needs replacement? Or is there still potential that software could be causing the freezing problem? If so, I'll continue trying to update drivers.

To date, I've deleted the first 4 drivers because I don't have a Corel/Canon/Avision scanner. I also uninstalled "SoundDrv.kmd" after removing the associated program DasyLab. I also uninstalled the program Dell MusicMatch Juke Box, which is associated with driver MxlW2k.SYS. No benefit so far.

That behavior likely indicates a hard disk problem. Have you tried a different cable from the hard disk to the motherboard? Have you made sure the cable is properly connected to each?

Have you run hard disk diagnostics? What about Memory/RAM diagnostics?

  • Run Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs.

For any drives that do not give the message:
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems
run disk check again as above. In other words, if it says:
Windows has made corrections to the file system
after running the disk check, run the disk check again.

  • Run all Basic tests with SeaTools: S.M.A.R.T. Check, Short Drive Self Test, Drive Information, Short Generic, and Long Generic. Run the tests for all HDDs.
  • Run Memtest86+ for at least 7-10 passes. It may take up to 22 passes to find errors. You should also run it once when the system has been on for a few hours and is warm, and then run it again once the system has been off for a few hours and is cold.

Also, in case Memtest86+ misses anything and comes up with no errors, run the extended version of the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool for at least five passes. You may want to run both Memtest86+ and the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool overnight since they take a long time to complete (run them an hour before bed each of the next two nights and check before going to sleep that they are still running).

As you check cabling for the hard disk, follow these steps for ESD safety:
  1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
  2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
  3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
  4. Make sure you are grounded by using proper grounding techniques, i.e. work on an anti-static workbench, anti-static desk, or an anti-static pad. Hold something metallic while touching it to the anti-static surface, or use an anti-static wristband to attach to the anti-static material while working. If you do not have an anti-static workbench, desk, or pad, you can use your computer tower/case by finding a metal hold in it, such as a drive bay.
Once these steps have been followed, it is safe to remove and replace components within your computer.

I did install a different hard drive cable with no improvement. To narrow the troubleshooting, I also removed the second hard drive. I have run hard drive and memory diagnostics multiple times. Tests previously tried include Dell PC Doctor Suite, Disk Check, Seatools, Memtest 86, and Memtest 86+. Except for Disk Check, none of these tools have ever found errors. All run well, with no freezing.

I have run Disk Check a handful of times. Typically when I do this, the first time finds and corrects errors. The second time running through always shows the hard drive ok. Is there a way to know if the recurring errors are the cause of the freezing--or the effect of many improper shutdowns?

Just to be sure, I reran Disk Check twice yesterday. The first time found and corrected errors. The second time was clean. All tests with Seatools pass. MemTest 86+ completed 12 passes without errors. (I ran this overnight last week.) Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool completed 9 passes last night without errors.

Are there any additional suggestions?

I would suggest borrowing a hard drive from someone if you can and see if problems cease. If you can avoid buying a drive, that would be preferable.

I have seen hard drives pass all tests and still have problems; I recently had two do that on my own system that were replaced in the past month and finally fixed the problem.

Have you cleaned the dust out of the system as suggested by Innvader03

Dust Removal:
To remove dust, follow the subsequent general procedure. If you have a desktop bought from Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, etc. make sure removing the desktop casing will not void your warranty first. Call the company if you are still under warranty and ask if it is okay to remove the casing and blow dust out. The procedure described is fine for laptops; just make sure no stickers are on panels saying if you remove the panel it will void the warranty.
  1. Shut down and turn off your computer.
  2. Unplug all power supplies to the computer (AC Power then battery for laptops, AC power for desktops)
  3. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to close the circuit and ensure all power drains from components.
  4. Remove the casing for a desktop, or remove any screwed on panels and disc drives for laptops.
  5. Blow out the dust inside by using a can of compressed air or a low pressure compressor. You will want to put the computer on a desk or table so you can maintain the can in an upright position if using a can of air. Blow into all crevices on the motherboard, heat sinks, cards, modules, etc. for a desktop. Blow into vents, opened panels, disc drive areas, USB ports, and the keyboard if it is a laptop. You may also want to blow inside the disc drive by replacing the drive to the laptop, starting the computer, opening the drive, and then turning off the computer and removing all power as described above including the 30 second power button step. For a desktop, you may also want to blow inside the disc drive by starting the computer, opening the drive, and then turning off the computer and removing all power as described above including the 30 second power button step.
  6. Replace casing for the desktop. Replace panels and disc drive (if you have not already done so) for the laptop.
  7. Plug power supplies in. AC adapter for the desktop. Battery and then AC Adapter for the laptop.
  8. Start the computer and see if performance is better.

Easier Laptop steps:

  1. Get a can of compressed air...
  2. Shut down and turn off your system...
  3. Unplug the system from any docking stations...
  4. Remove the AC Adapter and then remove the battery...
  5. Hold down the power button for 30 seconds to ensure all power is drained from the components. This closes the circuit and allows any remaining power to dissipate; it also clears the temporary memory of corruption and resets hardware/software connections. No permanent changes are made to the system doing this step...
  6. Use the can of compressed air to blow into every vent, crevice, keyboard key, USB port, VGA/monitor port, etc...
  7. Replace the battery and then plug in the AC Adapter...
  8. Replace the docking station...
  9. See how the system runs after doing all these steps...

WARNING: Never use a vacuum cleaner or hair drier to clean dust out of your system!!

I did painstakingly clean out the computer several weeks ago when I removed the second hard drive. Sorry I forgot to mention that.

I'll check around to see if a friend has a hard drive with a Windows OS that I can borrow.

Meanwhile, if you think of any other tests I can run, please let me know.

Thanks again for your assistance.
