Hi

An 0x24 error means that the driver Windows uses to read and write to NTFS volumes is damaged or the NTFS volume is corrupt.

To boot from the CD, enter BIOS (One of the F keys you mentioned) and edit the boot order so that CD/DVD is first. Then boot into the CD. From there you can press R to enter the recovery console and attempt to run chkdsk on the drive.

If that fails, you can repair install XP:http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.html

Before inserting the windows xp install cd, did you change your boot priority to read from cd first?

If not reboot the machine and hit f2, go to something like device priority or boot order or something to do with the above, you should find a menu that lists a hard drive, floppy drive, cd-rom, etc. look at the bottom of the screen it will tell you which keys to press to move an item up or down, put cd-rom to the top so it is first boot device, save changes, reboot the computer and it will tell you to press any key to boot from cd. locate your any key and boot to the windows cd, it'll load a bunch of drivers and stuff and you'll get to the point it'll you if you want to set up windows XP, repair an install using recovery console, or cancel, select set up windows XP. press f8 to accept agreement and it will scan for previeously installed versions of xp, when it finds it, it will ask you to press R to repair the selected installation, Press R and follow the onscreen instructions, this SHOULD repair the blue screen error, if/when you can get back on, i'd suggest running any anti-virus/spyware and if you happen to have any maintenance programs or cleaners run them as well.

A repair install using the windows xp cd will not result in data loss of personal files, just do NOT install windows again on your harddrive unless you don't mind losing all your files and performed a format on your harddrive.

What devices do you have to choose from in boot priority? Some machines will read "cd-rom" and then "toshiba x1550 etc. etc." (not necesarily toshiba, but whatber brand cd-rom drive you have) being your actual cd-rom drive, selecting cd-rom instead of the actual drive installed on your computer may not read your CD-Rom. I've had this happen to me before on an older custom build AMD board, i had 2 cd-roms hooked up and it would give me the option of CD-Rom, DVD, NameBrandCD-Rom1, and NameBrandCD-Rom2, selecting cd-rom or dvd would result in having no cd-rom in that slot anymore.

Just a possibility. If you're getting a blue-screen error then it is loading from your harddrive first, because it is impossible to get a blue screen from any other device, and reading NO devices at all just obviously means whatever device you left as only choice is not a device that exists on your computer. If it doesnt work, try switching your CD-Rom IDE too, you have power going to it but the older IDE ribbons often can be messed up, i'd also try switching it off the IDE slot on the motherboard completely, meaning Motherboard >> Ide slot 1 >> Harddrive >> CD-Rom all on the same ribbon (flat connector on the back, not the multicolored small redish one but the more rectangle shaped one)

Other than that i couldn't say why it wouldn't give you the option to boot from CD when it's #1 on priority.

Also removing all devices from boot priority except cd (particularly your HDD) would be a useless waste of time, since you're gonna need your hardrive to install the new files from windows cd to.... >.>

Ah, but the CD should still see the drive, as BIOS will still read that the drive is there, just not bother booting from it.

Could be a damaged CD, or a faulty drive. If you have another CD you can boot from, try that in the drive. Or try the CD in another PC to see if it can read from it.

EDIT: Which CD are you trying to install from? If you use the Dell XP CD to reinstall the system, the resource CD should have the drivers you need after the install. But as it is an OEM CD, it will likely wipe all data off the drive before installing.
