Hi,
last night I was playing a game on my PC, when the game closed and froze up my computer. So I went ahead and manually rebooted it, but once it got past the Dell screen, it comes up with all the different ways to start windows. Safe mode, start windows normally, last known good config, etc. But it won't work no matter which one I choose. It never gets past the windows loading screen, and then if you let it sit a while, it will come up with the blue scree that says "The registry cannot load the hive (file): \systemroot\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SOFTWARE or it's log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable". I've tried putting in the Windows XP disk, but it doesn't read it. It's really starting to tick me off because we've got a lot of stuff on the computer that we can't replace. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Haloplayer. Is the boot order in the BIOS set to CD/DVD drive first? The windows disk wouldn't be read otherwise. It seems to me that a repair install of windows would sort this out.

The drive obviously can't be booted but you could put it into another computer as a slave and retrieve your files as it appears to be just the windows directory that is corrupted. I would back them up as soon as you can.
