Go to Windows Update and on the left panel look at View Update History. Write down the KB # of the Failed update and Google it with the word Download. then download the Stand Alone version of the Update.

Stand Alone as in Not Through Windows Update.
Go to Start/Search and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Programs and Features, find Microsoft Office suite, Right click it and choose Change or Uninstall. Here it will ask if you want to add or remove a program from the suite, or Remove Office or Repair Office. Choose Repair. This will take about 10 minutes or so. Restart the computer. Now download the Office update here https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2553347 be sure to choose your version or Windows 7 (eg) 32 bit or 64 bit.

I have Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010. During the repair I got an error 1704 message, which said to agree to undo some changes to continue, said Yes, but at the end I got the message 'M Office PP 2010 configuration did not complete successfully.

Did you Repair Office first before downloading?
If you have the installation CD for Office 2010, you can Uninstall it (Remove) in Programs and Features. this will not loose any of your settings, Emails, or documents. After restarting, Reinstall Office. then try the Update again.

If Repair didn't work, then no. You can choose to do a System Restore to a time before this happened.

Well, I just tried the same steps again, and the repair seems to have gone through. It says configuration is complete, and to exit and restart any open office programs. I haven't used office since logging on, could there be any open office programs?

That is a standard message when updating or installing software to exit any open programs and restart. If it still complains that there is an open Office program, Right click the TaskBar, start the Task Manager, go to the Process tab, look for Outlook, WinWord, Excel etc are still open. If so, End the Process, If not, restart the computer. You should be good to go.

aagh! I'm having another problem. It takes forever to log on to techsupportforum. While the page is loading to reach the site (before login) there comes a message ''techsupport is having trouble... due to a long running script.'' option: ''cancel script?'' So I cancel script, then it finally loads, but I then get ads on the site. Please advise...
Thanks.

Ads are how this site pays for the free content you are enjoying.
What browser are you using? In IE11, go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced under Browsing put a check in the box Disable Script Debugging, (Internet Explorer) and (Other)

Sometimes, the site itself acts up. It's usually corrected in the next day or so. If you continue to have problems, First clear the internet Cache. In IE go to Tools/Internet Options/Browsing History/Delete button. Still having problems, then reset IE11 to default. Go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset Internet Explorer Settings/Reset button.
