There was a file that was corrupted in my C:\WINDOWS\ directory called run.vbs. I thought it was a bad idea to delete it and did anyway. Now my computer starts and loads fine up to the sign in screen. Once I log in to my user, I get an error saying cannot locate run.vbs (duh) and the screen stays black. I have the mouse, I'm able to get to the ctrl+alt+dlt menu, task manager, and msconfig. Please help!

Not familiar with scripting, but try a restore point to a time before the error occurred. It would have been better to use last known good configuration but you logged in already.

Access the command prompt from recovery console and type rstrui.exe if you can't from Windows.

I don't think that run.vbs is an actual windows file, it's a vb script file that somehow is being loaded with your system. If it were me, I'd boot to safe mode with networking, download malwarebytes free version, and run it. Don't be disheartened, everyone on here is a volunteer and I'd say all have jobs and lives. We help where and when we can.

yes! you did help me! I'm not disheartened because no one was helping, I was disheartened because I thought no one could help.

fun update, I reinstalled windows via a troubleshooting menu, but now it's not working worse than before. I just get a black screen after the windows symbol loads for a bit.
