Windows Vista is saying "Access Denied" when trying to install drivers for USB device

1st noticed when I plugged in my iPhone & instead of the ususal little popup box asking what to do with pictures (can't recall what it's actually called) it now comes up with New Hardward Found.

The iPhone syncs ok with iTunes as the "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" is ok in Device Manager & I can transfer music & videos etc



However the "iPhone" shows an exclamation mark in Device Manager - which is the camera drivers, meaning it doesn't show as a drive in My Computer.

Whenever I plug my iPhone into the USB it always comes up with new hardware found & tries to locate the drivers, it does this ok but when installing them it always come back with the message "access is Denied" I have tried reinstalling them from within Device Manager as well but get the same message.



I have also plugged in a USB card reader previously unused on the laptop to check if it was just my iPhone & again it finds it as new hardware & tries to install the drivers but again comes back with "Access is Denied" So it's not related to just my iPhone, it looks like is related to USB devices.

I have tried using a different USB port (There are 3) one of which has the mouse plugged into & the mouse works ok, the other has a bluetooth dongle in it & that works ok as well.

I have turned off User Account Control & this has made no difference.

I have got Avira & Comodo Firewall installed & have also done the Panda online scan & nothing was found apart from a few cookies.

I am running Win Vista Home Premium - service pack 2

Hope I've given enough info there so that someone can help me out with this.

Download the driver EXE file & save to desktop. RIGHT-click on desktop EXE icon, select "Run as Administrator"

That might do it, but COMODO either is or will be a problem. It's firewall does not play nice with Vista and causes system services to crash. All 3rd party firewalls have this problem if not completely configured properly for NETBIOS ports in particular. If 1st suggestion does not work - remove comodo.

Thanks will give that a try.

I must have lucky so far then as I got the laptop in May & installed Comodo on it straight away & up till last week not had any problems like this before, only got my iPhone in Spetember & it worked straight away without any problems. Thinking back over the last week or so I'm sure Comodo has done several auto updates which could probably have changed something to give me this problem.

Is Vista's firewall safe to use on it's own or is there any other 3rd party firewall that does play nicely with Vista?

Any appcrashes?
- fading white background in IE or Windows Explorer
- spinning blue circle
- "Not Responding.." - top right of screen

If none - you're most fortunate; if YES... COMODO firewall is the likely culprit.

If you are happy w/ COMODO... fine by me - you got it configured properly.

I've not had any other problem occur while using COMODO firewall until this. I tried downloading the drivers & running as administrator & still got the same message.

So I uninstalled COMODO restarted & tried again, installed straight away with no problems at all :smile:

Thank you so much I would never have thought it would have been COMODO as I said before, I've never had any other problems with it.

So do I try another firewall or just go with Vista's standard?

Hi, Vista's firewall is fine for most users. I do not recommend comodo for the very reason you have experienced. It can be repaired though just so you know for future reference (good for 7 as well)

1. Open a Windows Explorer window by right clicking on Start and
then clicking on Explore.
2. In the address bar, type C:\windows\inf and press Enter.
3. Find and then right click on the file named INFCACHE.1.
4. Select Properties.
5. Click on the Security tab.
6. Click on Edit to edit the permissions of the file.
7. Click on Add to add User Groups.
8. Type Administrators in the User Groups field and click on OK.
9. Set Administrators to Full Control and click on OK.
10. Move or delete the file INFCACHE.1.
11. Reinstall a device to force Windows to rebuild the INFCACHE.1 file
(DO NOT reinstall the same external hard drive that you were having
issues detecting before. Please connect another USB device other than
the one that Vista had an issue detecting).

Thanks, I'll stick with Vista's firewall then, if others have had lots of problems with COMODO I'd rather not re-install it even though this is the first problem I've had it could be the start of many! I just remember on Win XP being advised not to use the standard firewall & to install a 3rd party, so I used Sygate but that didn't work with Vista back in May, might look into that again & see if it's now compatible with Vista.

Very true for XP....

But Vista & Windows 7 security is very different
