windows vista home premuim freezing

4880 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  DT Roberts
well im kind of new to these fourms, and was wondering if I could find an anwser to this problem.
my laptop is a Dell inspiron 1545
model no:pp41l
with windows vista home premium pre installed
the computer is pretty new it was bought at the beginning of this year.
I recently installed Daemon tools v2.5 and Company of Heroes (however the problem started like a month afterwards)
It began when I ran mozilla firefox and it began to crash
Problem: my computer starts up but freezes right away whenever I click anything, it does not even allow me to turn it off or restart it.
It does not display any error messages it just stays stuck indefinitely.
sorry I could not provide more information but at the time I don't really know any more.
any help would be appreciated. thank you.

Hello Chris and welcome to TSF.

Daemon Tools is the cause of many problems in Vista/Windows 7, but there's no way of knowing for sure if that's the problem just yet. Please follow the instructions here: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-452654.html
thank you very much, I had a feeling it might have been daemon tools. I'll follow the instructions, many thanks!
however a problem arises, the instructions are meant to be followed on the laptop with the problem, it crashes as soon as I open anything.
Can you boot into safe mode? To try, hold F8 when you turn the computer on and select Safe Mode with Networking. If so, follow the instructions from there. And FYI, I haven't heard of Daemon Tools rendering a system completely unusable before.
Actually, you are supposed tap F8 or at least that's my understanding of it....

I apologize, it's tapping for Vista. For Windows 7 I believe that you need to hold it - or at least I have to on both of my machines. Another poster once said the same thing, they couldn't get it to work by just tapping. Whichever works, do it!

I appreciate it, Mark.
I can boot it to safe mode, however I'm noticing that I have 2 problems instead of one
1. when I plug in the charger it freezes on the next task.
2. without the charger it runs normally to some extent but freezes when trying to open certain programs.
I'm also beginning to doubt its daemon tools.
Daemon Tools very rarely causes systems to freeze up as you described... But I'd like more clarification on this:
Code:
1. when I plug in the charger it freezes on the next task.
Try following these instructions from Safe Mode: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-452654.html

If that doesn't work then navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump, zip all of its contents and attach it to your next post.
well this is what I know
Service pack= 1
bios version= A10
service tag= t5n4xj1

Memory
installed 3072mb
available 3032mb
speed 600mHz
channel mode Dual
technology DDR2SDRAM
Dimm A size 1024mb
Dimm B size 2048mb

processor= Pentium Dual core cpu t4200 @2.06hz
core count= 2

Video controller= intel Gm45 Graphics
Video Bios version= 1706
Video memory= 32mb

thank you very much for your help so far.

I'll look at the files now, but before getting into it install Service Pack 2: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...d5-f907-4406-9012-a5c3199ea2b3&displaylang=en

The system often does not function properly without the latest service pack installed, so I'd like to rule that out before advancing and incorrectly blaming something else.

EDIT: There were no minidumps collected, so please navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump, zip all of its contents and attach it to your next post. If it's not there, follow these insructions to enable dump logging: http://carrona.org/setmini.html
My wife's Inspiron 1545 has started displaying the exact same problem. She's running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.
The only new programs that have been installed have been windows updates so I'm wondering if one of the updates has caused the issue!
We managed to do a system restore, reverting back to a point a couple of weeks ago. It seems to have helped as she has been using her laptop for the past half hour with no problems (fingers crossed)
